The Faculty of Humanities invites applications for the position of Lecturer in Book and Paper Conservation to teach the theory and practice of book and paper conservation to students in the Master and Advanced Professional Programmes.

The successful candidate will collaborate with the Programme’s current part-time lecturer in book and paper conservation. Preferably the candidate should have specialist knowledge of paper to complement the current lecturer’s focal expertise in books and manuscripts. He/she will build upon and teach theory and practical coursework in book and paper preservation and conservation, including knowledge of materials, techniques and construction methods, as well as topics that are specifically relevant to this specialization, such as digitization, conservation of large scale collections, and methods for the safe display of objects. He/she will also teach an introduction to book and paper conservation in the BA minor programme. The candidate will supervise book and paper conservation treatment and research projects and provide mentoring and advice to the students during their 4 years of study.

Tasks

• Co-developing, coordinating and delivering courses in the object-based, hands-on classes for book and paper conservation;
• contributing to the development of pedagogical innovation within the Master and APP Conservation and Restoration programme;
• organizing and coordinating the provision of guest lecturers involved in the programme;
• supervising and mentoring student research (including Master and APP theses) and hands-on projects in book and paper conservation;
• up-keeping and maintaining the book and paper conservation laboratory and the photography documentation studio;
• building client relations with regard to internships and acquisition of objects for student hands-on sessions and research;
• serving on department and university committees, participating in department and university events, and advancing the department's public outreach initiatives;
• attending team meetings;
• performing administrative tasks that go with teaching.

• Advanced experience and skills in the conservation of book and paper objects of all kinds;
• MA degree or higher in book and paper conservation, which may include certificates from internationally recognized academic conservation programmes;
• preferably (working on) a PhD related to conservation studies;
• demonstrable didactic abilities and/or training, evidenced by an educational portfolio;
• demonstrable experience with teaching and co-developing courses for book and paper conservation at a graduate level;
• evidence of scholarly work such as published research and lectures on relevant conservation issues at (international) conferences;
• organisational experience and skills;
• the Dutch Basic Teaching Qualification (UTQ/BKO), or willingness to acquire this within the first two years. Acquiring the BKO is a prerequisite for a permanent employment contract;
• well-developed communication skills; evidence of ability to work co-operatively and collegially within an interdisciplinary work environment.

Teaching and admin duties require native or near-native fluency in Dutch and English; employment contracts are subject to the candidate’s proficiency in both, or their undertaking to acquire this proficiency as speedily as possible. Non-native Dutch speakers must achieve an active and passive command of Dutch within two years. Passing the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language (NT2), programme II, is a prerequisite for a permanent employment contract.

Our offer

The contract is initially temporary for a period of two years. Positive assessment and evaluation can be expected to lead to a permanent contract. The contract will commence preferably 1 December 2020, sooner if possible.

The UFO profile for this position is, Docent 3 (scale 11) The gross monthly salary will range from €3,746 to €5,127, based on a full-time employment contract (38 hours a week). The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.

Based within the Faculty of Humanities, the four-year Graduate Programme in Conservation and Restoration of Moveable Cultural Heritage is the sole university-level programme for conservation in the Netherlands. The programme is taught in English. It offers a two-year Master in Conservation Studies in one of nine conservation specializations and a separate track in Technical Art History. The Master programme is followed by a two-year Advanced Professional Programme (APP) that leads to the qualification of conservator. We offer the opportunity to teach in a dynamic academic environment in which new didactic methods are developed and where you will receive support for further career development.
