The Faculty of Humanities invites applications for the position of Lecturer in Book and Paper Conservation to teach the theory and practice of book and paper conservation to students in the Master and Advanced Professional Programmes.

The successful candidate will collaborate with the Programme’s current part-time lecturer in book and paper conservation. Preferably the candidate should have specialist knowledge of paper to complement the current lecturer’s focal expertise in books and manuscripts. He/she will build upon and teach theory and practical coursework in book and paper preservation and conservation, including knowledge of materials, techniques and construction methods, as well as topics that are specifically relevant to this specialization, such as digitization, conservation of large scale collections, and methods for the safe display of objects. He/she will also teach an introduction to book and paper conservation in the BA minor programme. The candidate will supervise book and paper conservation treatment and research projects and provide mentoring and advice to the students during their 4 years of study.
Tasks
Teaching and admin duties require native or near-native fluency in Dutch and English; employment contracts are subject to the candidate’s proficiency in both, or their undertaking to acquire this proficiency as speedily as possible. Non-native Dutch speakers must achieve an active and passive command of Dutch within two years. Passing the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language (NT2), programme II, is a prerequisite for a permanent employment contract.

The contract is initially temporary for a period of two years. Positive assessment and evaluation can be expected to lead to a permanent contract. The contract will commence preferably 1 December 2020, sooner if possible.
The UFO profile for this position is, Docent 3 (scale 11) The gross monthly salary will range from €3,746 to €5,127, based on a full-time employment contract (38 hours a week). The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.

Based within the Faculty of Humanities, the four-year Graduate Programme in Conservation and Restoration of Moveable Cultural Heritage is the sole university-level programme for conservation in the Netherlands. The programme is taught in English. It offers a two-year Master in Conservation Studies in one of nine conservation specializations and a separate track in Technical Art History. The Master programme is followed by a two-year Advanced Professional Programme (APP) that leads to the qualification of conservator.
