Job description

The Institute of Data Science at Maastricht University, a collaborative environment for multi-disciplinary data science research, interdisciplinary training, and data-driven innovation, is seeking applications for a Postdoctoral researcher in Biomedical Discovery Science position. 

Your research will focus on selected topics in the following areas:

  • drug discovery, personalised medicine, or the learning healthcare system

  • building and mining knowledge graphs from structured and unstructured data sources

  • developing intelligent methods for large scale data integration and data summarization

  • machine-assisted curation and text mining

You will be responsible to:

  • Develop specifications, methods, frameworks, and applications in computational knowledge discovery in the field of biomedicine.

  • Participate in and lead externally funded research projects

  • Collaborate with researchers inside and out of the Institute

  • Supervise undergraduate, masters and PhD students

  • Be involved in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels

Requirements

  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Biomedical Informatics, Data Science, Computer Science or related area

  • Research experience and technical virtuosity exemplified by a publication record in at least two of the following areas:

    • formal knowledge representation, ontologies, knowledge graphs

    • machine learning / deep learning

    • semantic web technologies

  • Programming skills, preferably Python or Java, and code versioning using GitHub/GitLab

  • Well versed in biomedicine  (drug, genes, protein, phenotypes, interactions, etc)

  • Preferably experience working with biomedical databases (PubMed, DrugBank, CTD, etc)

  • Fluency in English, both oral and written, and scientific writing

  • We offer a 4 year full-time appointment as Postdoctoral researcher. Start date as soon as possible;

  • Remuneration will be according to according to standard salary levels for Postdoctoral researchers starting with a salary of €2.790,- with a yearly growth to €5.127,-  gross a month, based on a full-time appointment (38 hours/week);

  • On top of this, there is an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end of the year allowance;
