Job description

The successful candidate is expected to:

 Participate and lead work within EU funded Research projects focused on digitalisation (focus on the construction sector) (75%)

  • Lead EUR work alongside principal investigator in evaluating and determining effective privacy and security sensitive practices for digitalisation deployment within construction sector;
  • Perform privacy assessments of digitalisation processes developed to increase sustainability and determine effective means and strategies for mitigating potential privacy infringement;
  • Evaluate workplace surveillance issues based on the deployment of IoT systems that rely upon AI determined methodologies; 
  • Develop effective policies and processes with project partners for implementation into business models that are privacy and security sensitive;
  • Supervise post-doctoral research and research assistants working on related research projects;
  • Develop project based and related empirical research that is publishable in established international refereed journals;
  • Contribute actively to the ERMeCC (Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture) based MAPS research cluster (Media, Artificial intelligence, Privacy, Surveillance/Security);
  • Expand the Department’s national and international research connections;
  • Contribute to the acquisition of external research funding from national and international funding agencies and other organizations.

    Teaching (25%)
  • Perform teaching and supervising tasks for the International Bachelor’s programme in Communication and Media (IBCoM) and the forthcoming Master’s programme on Digitalisation, Surveillance & Societies;
  • Supervise Master’s and Bachelor’s theses in topics related to the candidates interests and skills;
  • Make a substantial contribution to the development of both bachelor and master level courses in digitalisation, surveillance, privacy or related topics;
  • Actively develop pedagogical skills and practices.

    Service
  • Contribute to the management tasks of the Department;
  • Take an active part in relevant national and international academic networks and organizations;
  • Develop and maintain close contacts with relevant organizations and professionals in the related research fields and teaching areas.

Requirements

The successful candidate considers it a challenge and a privilege to contribute to the ongoing research work of these project and contribute to the educational programmes, specifically the International Bachelor’s programme in Communication and Media and the forthcoming Master’s programme on Digitalisation, Surveillance & Societies at Erasmus University.

She or he has:

  • A PhD degree in the field of media and communication or another relevant social science discipline (e.g. business administration, policy, law, economics, sociology, marketing, organizational science);
  • A strong research track record, including publications in international refereed journals;
  • Extensive knowledge of and ample experience with social-scientific research methods;
  • The ability and willingness to develop and conduct cross-national, comparative research with international partners;
  • Expert knowledge related to digitalisation, privacy, data protection and/or workplace surveillance;
  • Willingness or interest in learning and engaging with the transitioning construction sector and related technology, including BIM and Digital Twin technology developments;
  • The potential to generate research funds from national and international funding agencies and to supervise junior researchers and PhD students;
  • Prior teaching experience in an international environment with the proven ability to inspire students from undergraduate to postgraduate levels, apparent from positive assessments by students and peers;
  • Strong communication and organisational skills and the ability to work closely together with others in an international and diverse team environment;
  • Excellent proficiency in spoken and written English. Non-English speakers must meet the C2-standards of the Common European Framework (CEFR)

Conditions of employment

Employment starts in January 2021. The intended contract will be for a fixed term of three years. Dependent upon a positive evaluation of progress, funding and student numbers, candidates may be offered a subsequent contract with the department (potentially adjusting research and teaching ratio) after this contract is completed.

The conditions of employment correspond with the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch Universities (CAO NU). Salary is subject to training and experience and corresponds to Scale 12 CAO NU, with a minimum of € 4.538,- and a maximum of € 5.826,- gross per month on a 38 hour per week contract.

The EUR has attractive employment conditions, which include a holiday allowance of 8.0%, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and 41 annual vacation days in case of a full workweek.
