Job description

A PhD position is available at the University of Twente (the Netherlands) within the faculty of Science and Technology. The research goal of Wong Research Group (https://albertwong.nl) is to design special-purpose computers and embedded systems, based on networks of chemical reactions (the fundamental computing unit in Nature). In the proposed project for this job opening, we aim to create spatially organized networks of reactions to enable ‘in-memory’ computing platforms that can predict how dynamical systems evolve. Chemical computers of this sort could process information based on concepts outside the realm of digital logic-based computers (e.g., through local decisions and cross reactions), and may become increasingly favorable when challenged with complex problems. The combination of i) the interdisciplinary nature of our research cluster “Organic Materials Chemistry & Technology” (https://www.utwente.nl/en/tnw/omct/), ii) the focus on nonlinear dynamics of chemical reaction networks, and iii) the unparalleled possibilities at MESA+ Institute in the fabrication of nano- and microfluidic devices will provide a unique foundation towards achieving this goal.

Requirements

We seek for a colleague with a background in chemical engineering. You will lead projects that enable information processing (through flow or diffusion) using molecular components and ‘chemically active surfaces’. That is, you will explore the possibilities to combine easy-to-use microfluidic and hydrogel systems with basic chemical concepts to couple molecules into interacting networks of reactions. Candidates with demonstratable:

Experiences in 3D-printing, flow chemistry, gel wet-stamping, and/ or microscopy are preferred, as core activities may involve the design and fabrication of microfluidic devices and hydrogel systems.

Communicative skills are preferred, as communication among students/peers will be encouraged through supervision and collaboration, and as successful dissemination of results in your Ph. D. will involve seeking dialogues with researchers from different disciplines.

Conditions of employment

We offer a very challenging fulltime position in an inspiring multidisciplinary and international environment. The university offers a dynamic ecosystem with enthusiastic colleagues in which internationalization is an important part of the strategic agenda.
