We are looking for a tenure track candidate who will be encouraged to develop a largely externally funded research programme in her/his research field. The tenure track candidate will become part of the Environmental Economics department at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The job entails teaching, conducting research, and fulfilling limited administrative duties in support of the strong teaching and research base. Teaching involves courses in general environmental economics and in courses related to the candidate’s own specialty for various BSc and MSc programmes.

Your duties

• develop a largely externally funded research programme in your research field
• teach, conduct research, and fulfil limited administrative duties in support of the strong teaching and research base
• show academic leadership
• maintain a high publication output
• raise competitive research funding
• on the longer term, build up a successful group around your field of expertise

• a PhD degree in environmental economics
• research interest and academic track record in one of the following, or related themes: energy economics, climate change economics, macroeconomics and the environment, economics of ecosystems, and environmental resource economics
• significant experience in academic teaching
• strong quantitative methodological skills

Fixed-term contract: 6 years.

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3,746 (scale 11)
and a maximum €5,127 (scale 11), depending on your education and experience. The job profile: is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 1 FTE.

We offer a tenure track position at the level of assistant professor, initially for the duration of 6 years. During the period, performance will be evaluated in terms of teaching,
publication record, and acquisition of prestigious personal grants or equivalent project
funding. After a successful evaluation permanent employment will be granted.

About the institute
Established in 1971, IVM is a leading environmental research institute that is internationally recognized for its high quality research output in a range of environmental disciplines, as well as for its interdisciplinary work. The mission of the institute is to contribute to sustainable development and care for the environment through scientific research and teaching. IVM aims to do excellent problem-oriented research that is useful to a wide range of stakeholders in the Netherlands and internationally. A unique strength of our research is to understand sustainability problems in their social and economic context. IVM’s research community works within four departments: Environmental Economics; Environmental Policy Analysis; Environmental Geography; and Water and Climate Risk. Since 2001 IVM has been part of the Faculty of Science at VU Amsterdam (legal name Stichting VU-VUmc).

The department of Environmental Economics (EE) leads the institute’s efforts in improving insights into the interaction between the environment and the economy. The department is one of the main groups of environmental economists in Europe, consisting of around 30 scientific staff and PhD researchers. The department strategy is to consolidate and further strengthen its position as a major player in the European field of environmental economics. Important fields of application include climate change, energy, water, ecosystem services, and environmental and natural resource management. The philosophy of EE department is to closely integrate its research projects with its teaching programme and to initiate and conduct research jointly with stakeholders and collaborating institutes. In the coming years, the EE department will further explore new research fields related to the economics of climate change and risk management, the economics of ecosystem services, and renewable energy economics. To advance its capacity in these emerging fields, the EE department offers a tenure-track position in environmental economics.
