The University of Amsterdam invites applications for tenure-track faculty positions in Strategy, International Business and Innovation. Successful candidates will work as Assistant Professor at the Strategy and International Business section of the Amsterdam Business School (ABS).

Job description

The job entails a six-year tenure-track position. Conditional on meeting the tenure-track criteria, the school will offer a tenured position as Associate Professor.

Your main tasks will be to:

  • initiate and perform academic research culminating in publications in leading journals;
  • teach and supervise theses in our BSc and MSc in Business Administration, the MBA and our Executive Programme Management Studies.

We are looking for candidates who take their teaching seriously and have published, or show a clear potential to publish in top-tier international journals, with experience from participating, presenting and/or organizing at relevant workshops or conferences and an active research agenda in the field.

For the position in the field of strategy we are looking especially for candidates with a clear research and teaching profile at the crossroads of (competitive) strategy, innovation, and change. In line with this profile, we are looking for candidates interested in strategic innovation, dynamic capabilities, organizational learning, exploration-exploitation, and organizational search behavior, against the backdrop of changing business landscapes and disruptive technologies.

For the position in the field of international business we are looking especially for candidates with a clear research and teachning focus on international business, preferably whose research agenda links up with the ongoing research at our section in the context of corporate governance, corporate social responsibility and ethics, sustainable development, innovation and global mobility, offshoring, emerging economies, culture, and digital transformation in global value chains.

For the position in the field of innovation we are looking for scholars who share our passion for the field of strategy and digital innovation and will contribute to our research and teaching on digital transformation. Digital transformation has become a key strategic issue for companies as it disrupts competitive environments, value chains, business models and professions within organizations. Drawing on research that uncovers the fundamentals of digital strategy, platform business models and innovation, the candidate should contribute to an integrated view of leading digital transformation and innovation. For this particular opening we look for a candidate with experience in quantitative as well as qualitative research methods.

We are interested in candidates who:

  • hold a relevant PhD (or be close to finishing);
  • have a clear research portfolio and preferably already (forthcoming) publications in reputable journals;
  • take their teaching seriously with proven ability in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level;
  • are valued colleagues with both ability to work individually and with a team.

Conditions of employment

Our offer

Fixed-term contract: six years.

We offer a six-year tenure track position as Assistant professor. Upon meeting the criteria for tenure, we will offer a permanent contract as Associate professor. The gross monthly salary during the first three years will be, depending on experience, between €4,402 and €5,127 (salary scale 11) based on 38 hours per week (+ 16.3% holiday and end-year payments). After a positive evaluation the maximum salary becomes €5,826 (salary scale 12). This is based on 38 hours per week and in accordance with the salary scales and the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities regulating employment conditions at Dutch universities. A substantial temporary reduction in income tax (equal to 30% of taxable salary) may apply to non-Dutch candidates. The UvA offers a very attractive pension scheme.

Faculty Economics and Business - Strategy and International Business section

Education and Research at UvA's Economics and Business (EB) provides academic courses for more than 7,000 students in Economics, Business, Actuarial Science, Econometrics, and a variety of courses in the Executive Master’s programs. The Faculty also conducts research programs in many specialist areas and employs about 400 people. The EB has an internationally acclaimed profile and is located in the heart of Amsterdam. EB consists of the Amsterdam Business School (ABS) and the Amsterdam School of Economics (ASE).The Amsterdam Business School is located in the heart of Amsterdam, the cultural and business capital of the Netherlands, which offers a cosmopolitan living environment with excellent connections to the rest of the world. The Strategy and International Business section currently employs around 30 faculty members, in addition to PhD students, post-docs, and affiliated faculty. Since the establishment of ABS, the section has grown substantially, and building on the success of our teaching and research we anticipate further growth in coming years.

A common, although not exclusive, interest within our section is the role of business in society. ABS was ranked by FT as a top-10 business school for SDG-relevant research. Digital business has become an increasingly important topic in both research and education and the section is now building capacity to address related issues such as digital transformation and its consequences for organizational capabilities, learning, and strategy, the broader institutional effects of innovation (such as market creation and transformation), network strategies, and business analytics.

The section produces a steady stream of papers in internationally recognized journals, and members of the section have recently published in journals like the Academy of Management Annals, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Organization Science, Organization Studies, Research Policy and Strategic Management Journal.
