Job description

The Department of Sociology has a job opening for two assistant professors.

The assistant professor works at the Department of Sociology, which has strong research traditions in a wide range of topics in sociology including social inequality, crime, migration and integration, social networks, cooperative relationships, families and work, and computational sociology. It is part of the Dutch research school Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS).

We teach a bachelor programme in sociology and two master programmes: the one-year master: “Sociology: Contemporary Social Problems” and a two-year research master “Sociology and Social Research”.

The position has 60% teaching and 40% research time.

Tasks

The core tasks include:

  • participating in teaching at a bachelor’s and master’s level. The candidate will give lectures and independently contribute to teaching on different topics and curricula (the bachelor, the one-year academic master and the two-year research master);
  • participating in the research programme 'Social Networks, Solidarity and Inequality';
  • publishing research findings in (high impact) international scientific journals;
  • contributing to the acquisition of external research funding for the benefit of the research programme.

Requirements

  • A PhD degree in Sociology or a closely related field, e.g., social psychology, economics with affinity to problem-driven quantitative sociology.
  • Excellent track-record in research.
  • Demonstrable teaching skills. Being able to teach in Dutch as well as English will be an asset. Candidates who do not speak Dutch will be requested to learn to speak Dutch as soon as possible such that also teaching in Dutch is possible after some time.
  • Background in crime, families and work, migration and integration, or computational sociology.
  • Have obtained the Basic Teaching Qualification (at Utrecht University or equal) or willing to achieve this qualification in the near future.
  • Experience with writing research proposals to obtain research grants is an asset.
  • Being a team player.

Conditions of employment

We offer two positions for four years. The gross salary depends on qualifications and experience and will range from a minimum of €3,746 to a maximum of €5,826 per month based on a full-time employment (i.e. salary scale 11/12 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities).

The salary is supplemented with an annual holiday pay of 8%, and an end-of-year bonus of 8,3% per year.
