Job description

Structural design is the science and art of devising buildings, bridges and other structures that are safe, sustainable and elegant. This is an indispensable skill for current and future generations who must cater for the projected growth in urban population and deal with ageing buildings and infrastructure.

In the past 10 years the AE+T department has positioned itself at the interface of architecture and engineering that underpins excellent structural design. It has a world-leading academic reputation, a high impact in real-world applications and an excellent reputation with national and international employers in architectural engineering. The AE+T department is therefore uniquely placed to grasp the exciting opportunities in this field such as advanced materials, novel methods of construction; powerful computational design tools; the internet of things etc. All of which are rooted in a deep understanding of fundamental principles, strong conceptual design skills and excellent teaching that are a hallmark of TU Delft.

The research group Structural Design & Mechanics provides an excellent environment for a tenure-track position. The group is led by Prof. Mauro Overend and consists of a vibrant group of outstanding teachers and researchers and particularly with Architectural Glass led by Prof. James O’Callaghan.

The setting of these two research groups provides an excellent opportunity for this tenure-track holder to establish the Structural Design theme in the Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences BSc program and the Building Technology MSc program of the Department AE+T, and thus will play an important role in education and will give lectures and individual tutoring on the mentioned subjects.

The Structural Design & Mechanics research group provides an excellent environment for this tenure-track position. The group is led by Prof. Mauro Overend and consists of a vibrant group of outstanding teachers and researchers exploring safe, sustainable and elegant structures of the future through leading-edge research and inspirational education.

The setting provides an excellent opportunity for the tenure-track holder to strengthen existing and establish new Structural Design themes in the Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences BSc program and the Building Technology MSc program of the AE+T Department.

The tenure track position will focus on sustainable structural design. The successful candidate will strengthen the relationship between design and engineering at BSc and MSc levels and deliver excellent teaching (lectures, tutorials etc.) in structural design. Finally, the tenure tracker will undertake original research and author scientific publications independently and in collaboration with other colleagues.

Requirements

The successful candidate is expected to further strengthen the reputation of the department of Architectural Engineering and Technology at TU Delft and lead to an internationally distinctive teaching and research agenda within Sustainable Structural Design. This could include themes within advanced structural mechanics, sustainable structural materials or structural design as well as cross-cutting themes that bridge between these and other domains. Excellent candidates who can articulate a strong vision for any aspect of sustainable structural design are encouraged to apply.

The successful applicant will have a deep understanding of structural mechanics and / or computational mechanics.

She / he will contribute and champion core structural design teaching at Bachelors and Masters levels. Structural design is central to the courses at the Faculty of Architecture & the Built Environment at Delft, and the post-holder will help to maintain and develop our reputation for excellent teaching.

The successful candidate should have a PhD in a relevant subject, a strong track record of teaching and research activities and/or experience in the design of real-world structures.

The applicant should also have excellent communication skills and be willing to lead his/her own activities as well as work closely with colleagues in the Structural Design & Mechanics research group.

Knowledge of Dutch is welcome, but not required at the start of the position.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 years, with prospect of permanent.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. A Tenure Track offers young, talented academics a clear and attractive career path. Department

Afdeling

The department of Architectural Engineering + Technology is positioned between ‘traditional’ civil engineering and architectural design disciplines. Architectural Engineering and Technology connects both extremes, but more than this, it forms the new core of design for the built environment of the future, with sensitivity for aesthetics, health, heritage, safety, sustainability, biodiversity and other values, and with sufficient technical knowledge to enable innovation in numerous fields.

The Structural Design & Mechanics Group is a multi-disciplinary teaching and research group with expertise in structural mechanics, structural materials and structural design.

The group explores useful mechanical characteristics, engineer novel structural components and develops associated design methods to produce structures that are sustainable, safe and elegant.

The group has strong links with other teachers and researchers at Architecture, Civil Engineering and Materials Science at TU Delft. The group collaborates closely with other academics globally and with like-minded industrial partners ranging from local SMEs to multi-national PLCs.
