Job description

We are looking for a molecular microbiologist who has the vision and perseverance to set up his/her own research line. Your research should be embedded in the University themes Life Sciences or Pathways to Sustainability. We invite in particular candidates who study bacterial-fungal interactions or fungal human pathogens to complement the research that is currently being performed within the Molecular Microbiology group. You are also able to make a connection to research done elsewhere in the Institute, Department, Faculty, or University and seek funding for new research projects through personal, national, European, and other international grant opportunities. In addition, you will participate in teaching general and specialized microbiology courses at both the BSc and MSc levels and supervise bachelor and master research projects. Lastly, you are ambitious about performing outreach activities and participation in committees of the department or faculty.

The position is divided into 60% research and 40% teaching activities.

Requirements

Our ideal candidate is collaborative, is able to think critically and creatively, is organized and efficient, and has:

  • a PhD in Microbiology or a related field;
  • experience in publishing impactful science;
  • experience in acquiring external funding;
  • expertise in bioinformatics and/or biostatistics (considered an advantage);
  • demonstrable affinity for teaching. Experience with innovation in education is recommended;
  • excellent English proficiency and is willing to learn Dutch if applicable;
  • the capacity to develop leadership skills.

Conditions of employment

  • a full-time tenure track position for five years that will be subject to a mid-term evaluation after approximately 2.5 years and an end-term evaluation. If evaluations are positive after five years, the position becomes permanent;
  • a full-time gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranging between €3,746 and €5,127 per month (scale 11 at the level of Assistant Professor (universitair docent; UD) according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities (CAO);
  • benefits including 8% holiday bonus and 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
  • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment conditions based on the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities;

The Department of Biology consists of 12 research groups with 290 employees. The research groups are organized in the Institute of Environmental Biology (IEB) and the Institute for Biodynamics and Biocomplexity (IBB). Research groups of both institutes actively collaborate and share a top-level research infrastructure (including growth and microscopy facilities). Research of the Biology Department is ranked position 42 in the Shanghai Index. The Department of Biology is responsible for the bachelor Biology with more than 300 students enrolling every year, thereby training more than 30% of all biology students in the Netherlands.

The Molecular Microbiology group is part of IEB. This institute focuses on the Utrecht University themes Pathways to Sustainability and Life sciences and is part of the research hub Future Food. IEB groups collaborate with groups of IBB, departments within the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Medicine, the Veterinary Faculty, and the Hubrecht Institute and the Fungal Biodiversity Centre of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The Molecular Microbiology group at Utrecht University studies molecular processes involved in microbial pathogenicity, microbial development (e.g. mushroom formation), and microbial biotechnology. Research is curiosity-driven and is also of high interest to industry, agriculture, and society. The group teaches microbiology, biotechnology, molecular biology, and genomics at the bachelor and master levels.
The Faculty of Science consists of the departments Biology, Chemistry, Information and Computing Sciences, Mathematics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Physics. Each of these departments is organized in research institutes that work together to answer some of humanity’s most pressing problems.
