Job description

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD-candidate to explore the effect of surface modification and angle repositioning of TADs in orthodontic treatment. Gamechangers for survival?

These TADs are temporary mini-implants used to control orthodontic tooth movement and can be easily placed via minimally invasive procedures, allow fast mechanical loading, and are cheap. However, the current generation of TADs show high failure rates in some areas of the alveolar process, meaning that their stability is compromised prior to finalizing orthodontic treatment. In line with the optimization of regular dental implants via surface modifications, the goal in this project is to modify the surface of TADs to improve osseointegration and hence survival without compromising removability. Additionally, the angular placement of TADs will be explored to increase their capacity to withstand loading forces during orthodontic treatment.

Tasks and responsibilities
  • Formulating research questions and utilizing suitable methods to answer these.
  • Carrying out a systematic review and meta-analysis on the topic to gather information from the available literature.
  • Initiating animal experiments to evaluate the effect of TAD surface modifications and angulation on osseointegration and removability.
  • Writing scientific manuscripts toward publishing research in top scientific journals.
  • Presenting research data at (inter)national scientific meetings.
  • Participating actively in multidisciplinary research discussions.
  • Finalizing the temporary position with a PhD-thesis to be defended in public to obtain the degree of doctor in the medical sciences from Radboud University.
