Leiden University College The Hague (LUC), part of Leiden University’s Faculty of Governance & Global Affairs, is currently looking for an Assistant Professor with expertise in law as well as the social sciences

Functieomschrijving

The Assistant Professor will be responsible, inter alia, for teaching undergraduate students and conducting research on topics related to law and society that are relevant to current global challenges (in our curriculum framed as Peace & Justice; Sustainability; Prosperity; and Diversity).

The Assistant Professor should show clear affinity with the ‘Global Challenges’ focus of our program. In addition to the academic staff based at LUC, leading scholars from the other faculties of Leiden University participate in the teaching of the program. LUC staff is able to take full advantage of being part of Leiden University while also contributing actively to the energetic and stimulating atmosphere of our college community in The Hague. The key responsibilities are: 

  • Teach undergraduate students in an international and interdisciplinary program, including the courses Research Design IJ and the first-year course Global Challenges: Peace and Justice
  • Connect to and promote cooperation with other institutes within Leiden University, regarding both teaching and research, as relevant to the BA International Justice major;
  • Connect to other national, inter-governmental, and non-governmental organizations and stakeholders, in the city of The Hague and elsewhere, to facilitate collaborations and internship possibilities;
  • Carry out research, publish, and work towards obtaining external research grants. Research time is 20% of the appointment, the rest is dedicated to teaching and teaching-related administrative duties;
  • Participate in and contribute to LUC’s recruitment and admission activities; 
  • Participate in and contribute to the social and academic life of LUC.

Functie-eisen

  • A PhD degree which ideally combines law and one of the social sciences on a topic relevant to global challenges;
  • Experience with doctrinal and empirical research and interdisciplinary work, and an affinity with research design debates in their field (essential); 
  • Expertise in areas relevant to one or several global challenges;
  • Excellent command of English and willingness to learn the Dutch language (if not yet mastered);
  • Experience and affinity with the concept of Liberal Arts & Sciences education at university level, especially within an ‘honors program’ context;
  • Experience with and vision on teaching in an international and diverse environment, and an interest in fostering an inclusive learning and working environment;
  • Outstanding teaching skills, evidenced by formal evaluations, and a clear interest in innovative teaching methods and approaches, and providing academic guidance; 
  • Strong research skills, as evidenced by publication record and/or the ability to obtain competitive grants; 
  • Excellent social skills and ability to work constructively in an international and diverse team.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

The successful candidate will be part of an ambitious and dynamic team. The appointment is for one year with the possibility of a renewal and the intention to turn the position into a permanent one, depending on need, funding and performance. Salary range from € 3.746,- to € 5.826,- gross per month (scale 11 to 12 according to the terms of the Collective Labor Agreement of Dutch Universities).
