The Institute for Science in Society (ISiS) is looking for an Assistant Professor of Philosophy of Science and Technology (tenure track) who wants to strengthen our team and contribute to our joint mission to analyse, assess and improve the societal embedding of science and technology.
As an Assistant Professor of Philosophy of Science and Technology (tenure track) you teach courses in the philosophy of science and technology to science students at BSc and MSc levels. In addition, you will supervise thesis writing, especially by MSc students in our Science in Society programme. Next to teaching, you will carry out high-quality, internationally visible research that will contribute to the research line of our Institute for Science in Society (ISiS). You will be expected to publish in international journals, and attract external research funding from governmental, European and/or private institutions. Moreover, you will co-supervise PhD candidates, build international networks, and contribute to management and administration tasks.
As a philosopher within ISiS you have a strong interest in conceptual as well as ethical and societal issues related to science and technology, and in empirical studies of science. Moreover, you are willing and able to work in an interdisciplinary team, and collaborate with social scientists (within ISiS) and with natural scientists (within the Faculty of Science).
Fixed-term contract: 6 years.
We want to get the best out of science, others and ourselves. Why? Because this is what the world around us desperately needs. Leading research and education make an indispensable contribution to a healthy, free world with equal opportunities for all. This is what unites the more than 22,000 students and 5,000 employees at Radboud University. And this requires even more talent, collaboration and lifelong learning. You have a part to play!
The Institute for Science in Society (ISiS) is embedded in the Faculty of Science (FNWI) at Radboud University. FNWI is responsible for research and teaching in physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computer sciences. FNWI encompasses seven research institutes, one of them being the Institute for Science in Society. Both in research and education, ISiS is actively collaborating with the other FNWI institutes.
ISiS is a relatively small, interdisciplinary institute in which social scientists and philosophers collaborate in research and teaching. Focusing on the natural sciences and their relation to societal concerns, ISiS identifies, analyses and articulates issues related to clashing worldviews, mediates between societal groups, stakeholders and scientists, and strategically contributes through policy advice and public debates. ISiS is responsible for the MSc specialisation in Science in Society, accessible to MSc Science students.
Radboud University is an equal opportunity employer committed to equity, diversity and inclusion and to building a culturally diverse intellectual community; and as such encourages applications from people of colour, women, people with disabilities, people from LGBTQI+ communities, and people from other diverse communities.
