Job description

This PhD project aims to study and realize black hole event horizon analogues on a chip using the interacting between spin-currents and spin-waves (magnons). The work will mainly be experimental using state of the art deposition of magnetic materials and nanofabrication methods to create unique devices to address the underlying physics questions. Finally, these devices (the chip) will be the playground where we will try to generate the black and white hole event horizon analogues using inductive methods in a dedicated temperature controlled probe station. Realizing these horizons will open up many applications in the field of magnonics as it could pave the path to realize a spin-wave laser. The PhD candidate will work in close collaboration with theory development at the Utrecht University to guide the experiments and perform micromagnetic simulations. The PhD position is embedded in the graduate program of the Applied Physics department at the Eindhoven University of Technology. A large team of
PhD students in the host group Physics of Nanostructures are working on related topics and a collaborative environment is created in which the PhD candidate can optimally develop and broaden his or her expertise.

Requirements

For this function we are looking for a talented and highly motivated experimental physics candidate that would like to take up this challenge. The candidate should hold a recently
(<1 year) obtained MSc degree when starting the position, aiming for ~September 2021. Experience in the field of nanomagnetism/spintronics and/or device-oriented condensed matter physics is an advantage, but a clear drive and willingness to learn is leading. The position is for four years and follows the VSNU standards for PhD level candidates.
