Job description

The Department of Microbial Ecology offers a Postdoc position Enhancing Production of Pathogen-Suppressing Volatiles by Indigenous Soil Bacteria.

Project description:
The project, funded by NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences, aims to examine the possibilities to use production of pathogen-suppressing volatiles by soil bacteria as a disease control strategy. The envisioned approach is to stimulate production of pathogen-suppressing volatiles by indigenous soil bacteria. Organic materials containing precursors for production of suppressive volatiles by bacteria will be incorporated in soils. The expected stimulation of bacterial production of pathogen-suppressing volatiles by selected organic materials will be tested by (1) determining the produced volatiles and (2) measuring the effect on growth of plant pathogens. Furthermore, we aim to identity pathogen-suppressing volatiles as well as the bacterial groups and genes involved in their production.
