Job description

The Data Research Centre, Campus Fryslân, is recruiting a Post-Doc researcher to support research and organization of ongoing and potential future research projects. Specifically, the researcher will be involved in the Nuffic Orange Knowledge Programme ‘Enhancing Higher Education Capacity for an Interdisciplinary Cybersecurity Study Program’ and the EU Horizon 2020 ‘Cutting Crime Impact’ Project.

The Post-Doc researcher should have its expertise and focus on aspects relating to cybersecurity, governance of emerging technologies (e.g. AI, ‘smart infrastructure’, digital identity management) and digital literacy. We are searching for an individual that is flexible, curious, works independently, as well as in agile teams. The candidate should be motivated to work in an interdisciplinary research environment and enjoy engaging with European and international research networks.

Tasks
The successful candidate will support research and organization of the Nuffic Orange Knowledge Programme project ‘Enhancing Higher Education Capacity for an Interdisciplinary Cybersecurity Study Program’ and the EU Horizon 2020 ‘Cutting Crime Impact’ Project with the following tasks:

• Research on Topics such as cybersecurity, use of automated decision-making in public administration (e.g. predictive policing, facial recognition), law enforcement, privacy, regulation and governance of emerging technologies, digital literacy and digital identity.
• Work on peer-reviewed publications relating to these topics, book chapters, as well as blog posts and articles.
• Planning and Organisation of Blended Learning Sessions, Living Labs, seminars, conferences, and other project activities. This might have to take place online for the entire duration of the project depending on the overall circumstances.
• Coordinating and going on research exchanges/workshops should the circumstances allow (inter-)national travel. If possible, the candidate will be abroad for about two months for the duration of the contract.
• Collaboration and coordination with the European and International Research Network.

Additionally, the successful candidate will:

• Work on new research proposals as opportunities emerge.
• Carry out research and become a member in the Campus Fryslân Data Research Centre.

Requirements

The successful candidate has a background in one or more of the following disciplines

• European and International Law
• Human Rights Law
• Criminal (Procedural) Law
• Sociology
• Science and Technology Studies.

The successful candidate will have finished their PhD thesis in one or more of these areas before the start of the contract. Ability to speak Dutch and/or Bahasa Indonesia are an asset, but not required.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 12 months.

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

• a salary, depending on qualifications and experien ce, of €2,790 up to a maximum of € 4,402 (salary scale 10) gross a month on a full-time basis.

The starting date for this position is 1 September 2021. This position will be established for a fixed term period till 1 September 2022. Pending success with joint research proposals there may be an opportunity for the appointment to be continued.

Data Research Centre
The Data Research Centre (DRC) of Campus Fryslân combines expertise in data science with critical insight on interactions between society and technology. It functions as a co-creation space between researchers, students, and external stakeholders for research in all disciplines that connect to the domains of data science and its societal implications.
The DRC puts a particular emphasis on cross-disciplinary research. It aims to contribute concrete solutions based on reflective and critical analysis with a holistic approach and across disciplinary and cultural borders.
The Data Research Centre plays a crucial role for researchers of Campus Fryslân and facilitates data science training and practice amongst all educational programmes of Campus Fryslân. Events are also regularly hosted (workshops on blockchain, data analytics, security and the public order). Our team collaborates with industry, civil society, intergovernmental organizations, and governmental partners. The Data Research Centre is partner and host of DataFryslân.
