Job description

Research within the Sensor Engineering research group of Maastricht University is focused on developing innovative sensor technologies for implementation in diverse fields ranging from medical diagnostics to food safety assessment. For this position we are looking for a motivated education and research engineer with a solid background in electronics, data processing, electro-mechanics or equivalent. The candidate will work in a multicultural, interdisciplinary team consisting of engineers, chemists and biomedical scientists. The research group has developed extensive expertise in combining sensor technology with chemistry and biomedical engineering to acquire knowledge and streamline applications for use in real life settings.

As an Education and Research Technician you manage state-of-the-art hardware & software and support researchers in the lab in their research projects. You are responsible for maintenance and warrantee of several electronic devices such as solvent extractors, UV-VIS spectrophotometers and impedance spectroscopy analyzers. Knowledge of Labview and/or Matlab are a pre. You support and instruct researchers in the group by helping them set-up experiments and solving research issues. You are also involved in the design and construction of laboratory set-ups and help to translate ideas into practical, feasible solutions, always keeping a sharp eye on the safety aspects. You are responsible for keeping the equipment up-to-date and you get in touch with suppliers in case there are problems you cannot solve. This also includes the maintenance of standard lab equipment like vacuum pumps, cooling devices, glassware, rotavapors etc.

From a teaching point-of-view, you will take care of engineering-related lab and tutor sessions in the various bachelor programs within the faculty. You are also stimulated to obtain your UTQ and evolve towards a more independent teaching role, which enables you to coordinate educational tasks and give lectures. Furthermore, safety is an important part of your job description. You will need to ensure safe working conditions (i.e. conduct regular electrical inspections), provide first aid in the event of accidents, fight a small, starting fire, or alerting and evacuating employees and all other persons present on the premises in the event of an emergency.

Applications are invited for a 1.0 FT position. Potential candidates will work in a young, ambitious team consisting of researchers trained in various scientific disciplines. This stimulating, interdisciplinary and multicultural environment requires a candidate that has outstanding knowledge of scientific English both in speaking and in writing. The candidate should have an MSc or a PhD degree in engineering (biomedical, electronic, electromechanical…) or equivalent. A valid driver’s license is a pre. 

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 jaar.

The position is offered for 1 year with the possibility of a permanent appointment after a positive yearly evaluation. The salary will be set according to the salary scale of the Collective Labor Agreement of the Dutch Universities and will vary between €2790 and €4402. On top of this, there is an 8% holiday and an 8.3% year-end allowance. The terms of employment of Maastricht University are set out in the Collective Labor Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO). Employees relocating from abroad may be eligible for the Dutch ‘30% ruling’, a tax advantage which results in a significantly higher net salary. Furthermore, local UM provisions also apply.
