Job description

The successful candidate is expected to:

Teaching

  • Perform teaching and supervising tasks for the International Bachelor in Arts and Culture Studies programme (IBACS) and the international Master’s specialization Arts, Culture and Society;
  • Make a substantial contribution to the development of both bachelor and master level courses in the broader field of cultural sociology;
  • Depending on the successful candidate’s profile, teaching will include several of the following courses: MA course Applied Methods of Arts and Culture Research, Bachelor Graduation Project, MA thesis supervision on topics related to cultural sociology.

Service

  • Contribute to the management tasks of the Department;
  • Take an active part in relevant national and international academic networks and organizations;
  • Develop and maintain close contacts with relevant organizations and professionals in the field of arts and culture.

Requirements

To be eligible, a candidate must have:

  • A PhD degree in arts and culture studies, cultural sociology or a related field;
  • Excellent proficiency in spoken and written English. (Non-English speakers have to meet the C1-standards of the Common European Framework (CEFR).
  • Prior teaching experience, preferably in an international environment, with the well-documented ability to inspire students from undergraduate to postgraduate levels.
    Candidates who don’t possess a formal teaching qualification, are expected to acquire it within two years (according to the standards of the so-called BKO-University Teaching Qualification);
  • Advanced knowledge of social science research methods, both quantitative as well as qualitative;
  • A well-documented and sustained interest in arts and culture (work experience is also appreciated); 
  • Strong communication and organizational skills and the ability to co-operate with others and perform well within an international and diverse team.

Conditions of employment

Employment starts on 1 November 2021 and will run for a fixed term of 2 years.

The conditions of employment correspond with the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch Universities (CAO NU). Salary is subject to training and experience and corresponds to Scale 11 CAO NU, with a maximum of € 5.127,- gross per month on a 38 hour per week contract.

Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication

The Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) is part of Erasmus University Rotterdam. The school has three departments: HistoryOpent extern,  Arts and CultureOpent extern and Media & CommunicationOpent extern.

ESHCC offers high quality education, based on scientific research, at the intersection of the Humanities and Social Sciences. We teach our ambitious, Dutch and international students in a stimulating learning environment. After graduation, they will have acquired the knowledge, insight and skills to make an important and inspiring contribution to an increasingly international society in which diversity plays a major role.

The ESHCC also has an ambitious research agenda.
