The TU Delft is opening a PhD position in the project 'Minimizing the risk of induced seismicity associated with geothermal energy in fractured reservoirs', a project in the context of geothermal energy. Induced earthquakes are among the biggest problems for subsurface operations, where especially in fractured reservoirs the risk is considered significant. The aim of this project is to gain insight into the complex interactions between processes inducing stress changes on faults above, in, and below a fractured carbonate reservoir and the subsequent reactivation of these faults.

Note that the experimental work will take place 50% at the Rock Deformation lab at TU Delft (supervision by dr. A. Pluymakers), and 50% at the HPT lab at Utrecht University (supervision by dr. A. Niemeijer). The PhD student on this experimental project will work closely together with a PhD student on a numerical PhD project. Both PhDs will be in contact with an international industrial/academic steering committee.  

We welcome applications from the STEM disciplines, including (but not limited to) Earth Sciences, Civil / Mechanical / Petroleum Engeering. We are looking for candidates with strong scientific skills and curiosity. The absolute requirements are the following:

Knowledge of Dutch and/or German language would be a plus. 

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2395 per month in the first year to € 3061 in the fourth year.
