Job description

A full professor (0.8 - 1.0 fte) to chair the Remote Sensing Chair Group as part of the laboratory of Geo-Information Science and Remote Sensing of Wageningen University, a leading university in food, health and environment worldwide.

The Chair Group leads research and education in Remote Sensing within the (agro-)environmental domain. It drives excellent and internationally recognized fundamental research inspired by evolving remote sensing technologies and innovations in data science. The research focuses on five themes: sensing and measuring, modelling and visualization, integrated land monitoring, human-space interactions and empowering (agro-)environmental communities. Regarding these themes the Chair Group collaborates in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary settings.

As Chair of the Remote Sensing Chair Group, you will strengthen and innovate the research interest and educational activities, and manage the Chair Group's internal processes with an effective and constructive attitude. You will ensure the Chair Group continues to grow into an encouraging working environment for a diverse group of junior and established academics. Strengthening the acquisition of external funding for research and attracting PhD candidates are key elements of your responsibility. You will continue to strengthen the profile of the Chair Group in national and international networks, and enhance the groups successes in generating impact both within and outside academia.

Currently the Chair Group consists of 6 scientific staff, 9 postdocs, 2 lecturers and 21 PhD candidates. Together with the Geo-Information Science Chair Group, the Remote Sensing Chair Group forms the laboratory of Geo-Information Science and Remote Sensing. The mission of the laboratory is to improve spatial competences for a sustainable world. The laboratory is co-led by two chair holders, in (1) Geo-Information Science and (2) Remote Sensing (this vacancy). They take advantage of the synergy between both fields and operate as one group.

The laboratory is part of the Department of Environmental Sciences at Wageningen University. The department provides research and academic education on our living environment: nature, landscape, land use, mitigation and adaptation to climate change, water management, and the various competing claims on space.
