Utrecht University has opened two new faculty positions at Junior Assistant Professor level in the field of environmental sciences (fixed term, maximum 6 years). The teaching-research ratio of this position is 70% teaching and 30% research. Research time can be expanded at the expense of teaching time when research projects are successfully acquired.
Successful candidates for this professorship are expected to bring expertise on the main themes of our teaching and research programme, notably on land use and biodiversity, nutrient management, ecohydrology.
This is a position for academics who have obtained their MSc and want to continue their academic career, potentially leading to a PhD. The new Junior Assistant Professor will teach under the supervision of senior staff and will be part of a successful diverse team of senior staff members. Together you will design teaching programmes and courses in the Bachelor's Global Sustainability Science and the Master’s programmes Sustainable Development and Water Science and Management and successfully acquire research funding.
Together with your colleagues, you will contribute to the teaching and organisation of Bachelor’s courses, including:
- natural science courses (for example, Mathematics and System Analysis, Statistics, and courses of the Water, Climate and Ecosystems track such as Chemistry and the Environment, Ecohydrology, and/or Global Climate Change);
- as well as interdisciplinary sustainability courses (for example Duurzame Ontwikkeling, Environmental Impact Assessment, Regional Integration Project, Consultancy Project);
- and individual student supervision (Bachelor’s theses and “tutoraat”).
Under supervision the new Junior Assistant Professor will contribute to cutting-edge research on environmental change and ecosystems to develop competitive research proposals in the field. Empirically the successful candidate will have strong affinity with field research in ecology, biodiversity, soil and water quality, and/or ecosystem functioning. Lab experience and modeling skills are considered a plus. Based on their personal development as a teacher, the candidate can obtain a Basic Teaching Qualification, which is important for a further academic career. Finally, the candidate will be challenged to develop their own line of research and will be given the opportunity to contribute to or lead acquisition and the execution of externally funded projects. The possibility of obtaining a PhD is an explicit goal, but will depend on the ambition and personal wishes of the candidate. All teaching and supervision will be in English, which is also the working language of our research group and institute.
