About your role
We are seeking a talented scientist to strengthen our research section Multiscale Network Neuroscience (MULTINET). We strive to improve patient outcomes  by understanding and manipulating personalized multiscale network data. We investigate brain disease in general, and glioma specifically, on multiple scales: at the macroscale, we employ advanced neuroimaging and neurophysiology, as well as behavioral assessments. At the micro and mesoscales, we have access to unique data stemming from patients undergoing neurosurgery, and are looking for a conceptually strong scientist to develop and perform experiments that scope cell-cell interactions and circuit-level activity and connectivity. One of our leading questions is: when does the function versus pathology of a single cell propagate into beneficial versus aberrant activity and connectivity at the circuit level? How does this process ultimately impact the whole-brain connectome level? And how can we intervene on this detrimental cascade to halt or reverse cognitive impairment?

What you will do
Applicants should be ready to develop innovative research, focused on delineating cell-cell interactions and circuit behavior in different types of human brain data (e.g. in vivo single-cell recordings, ex vivo neurophysiology on resected tissue, histology and 3D microscopy on both resection tissue and postmortem donor data). Enthusiasm about embarking on an interdisciplinary journey aimed at investigating the brain across scales is essential in this feat, particularly since the department of Anatomy and Neurosciences is characterized by broad research from molecule to behavior according to the state-of-the-art on each scale. Your motivation letter should reflect your ideas on how your work and ideas may integrate with the approaches we have used before, in order to answer (some of) our key question(s): which cellular properties, that can be measured across data types, are indicative of circuit level changes in activity and connectivity? How can we use pharmacological or other types of interventions (e.g. perioperative cortical stimulation) to uncover mechanisms by which local activity propagates into circuit behavior? How can we assess the excitation/inhibition balance at the cellular level, and translate these measurements to the circuit and connectome levels?

About you
We are seeking a scientist with the following qualities and requirements:

  • You have completed a PhD in Neuroscience, Molecular (Neuro-)Biology, Biophysics or related field;
  • You have at least three years of postdoctoral research experience;
  • You have a strong publication record, both as first and last author;
  • You have been able to acquire external research funding;
  • You have a proven ability for academic supervision and training of students;
  • You have a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ/BKO), or are willing to obtain such a qualification;
  • You master the English language at CEFR C1/C2 level.

What we expect from you:

  • develop innovative research in collaboration with the research section head, which clearly connects to and augments existing research in the section and the department as a whole;
  • support this research with external funding;
  • supervise graduate students and contribute to undergraduate teaching, at bachelor and master levels, under supervision of the department head (0.2fte teaching position);
  • hands-on experience with experimental techniques in the lab that contribute to aforementioned research goals;
  • a keen interest in or experience with computational approaches is a plus.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: One year (12 months) with the prospect of a permanent contract.

About your workplace
You will be working at the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience of Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc, within the Multiscale Network Neuroscience (MULTINET) team. Our versatile team consists of neuropsychologists, doctors, neuroscientists, and physicists, with everyone looking at the brain network from a different perspective. This position is furthermore expected to support collaborations between the different research sections in the department. Ample technical support is available for this new research, and our lab facilities include a fully equipped immunohistochemistry lab, an advanced optical microscopy unit, a cell culture lab and an IT environment for computational neuroscience.
