The Department of Mathematics of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam welcomes applications for the position of a PhD student who also wants to contribute to the educational program of the department as a junior lecturer (and thus acquire teaching experience). The fully-funded position is for six years.
The preferred starting date is 1 September 2022, or before.
You will spend 50% of your time working on your PhD research. The research can be in any area of applied or pure mathematics that falls within the expertise available in the department.
In your application you should indicate who you would like your PhD advisor to be (it is essential to contact her/him before applying), and mention the research topic you want to pursue.
The remainder of your time is devoted to educational activities (40%), such as lecturing, supervising internships, working with students to improve their academic skills, initiating and participating in innovation projects related to educational improvement, as well as coordination and organizational tasks (10%) related to the educational programs. The mathematics department hosts two state-of-the-art bachelor and master programs in Mathematics and Business Analytics. The precise tasks will be determined in consultation, taking into account your background and interests as well as the needs of the department. You will also acquire a basic qualification in teaching ('BKO').
Applications from all groups currently under-represented in academic posts are particularly encouraged. We are working to improve the present gender balance within the department, and particularly welcome applications from women.
