Job description

Main tasks

Nowadays, we have access to massive amounts of geospatial data at unprecedented spatial, temporal, and thematic scales. Hence, data availability is becoming less of an issue for most applications. However, the development of methodological approaches that can transform these large and heterogeneous datasets into actionable geoinformation remains a challenge.

You will contribute to educational and research activities in the broad domain of geospatial data science. More precisely, the tasks to be carried out include (but are not limited to):
  • Teach in our scientific geocomputing, spatio-temporal modelling, and big geodata processing courses.
  • Carry out scientific research and support its valorization. This includes designing, implementing, and disseminating free and open-source solutions for geospatial data handling.
  • Support project acquisition and execution related to geospatial information technology.
  • Support the creation of courseware for in-house and distance education.
  • Contribute to the supervision of MSc students (including MSc research theses).
You should expand GIP capacities significantly in at least one of the following technical areas: scientific programming, data-driven modelling, geodata organization and big geodata management, modelling and integration.

You appreciate working in an international setting, are comfortable in a culturally and scientifically diverse environment, and have good inter-personal and communication skills. Further, you have general ICT knowledge including demonstrable experience with Python, R, or other programming languages as well as knowledge of code versioning and documentation. You also have demonstrable advanced knowledge and skills in at least two of the following domains, and an interest in acquiring at least basic proficiency in the remaining ones:
  • Spatio-temporal analytics and modelling (e.g., machine/deep learning, agent-based modeling)
  • Distributed and cloud computing (e.g., Python Dask, Azure/AWS)
  • Data integration/heterogeneous data analysis and curation (e.g., PostGIS, IoT)
  • Geoweb services and OGC standards (e.g., MapServer, Geoserver, SWE)

Conditions of employment

We offer an inspiring international environment. You will be initially employed for three years. Extension of the employment after this period is a possibility.

Department

The Department of Geo-Information Processing (GIP) is a multi-disciplinary scientific team that develops computational methods for processing (acquiring, organizing, analyzing) spatio-temporal data and information, which in turn are used to build models, visualizations and information systems to improve our understanding of dynamic spatial systems and to help in decision-making at multiple spatial and temporal scales.
