The Department of Human Resource Studies of Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences (TSB) is looking for Two Assistant Professors in HR studies (0.8-1.0 fte) and an Assistant Professor with an education profile (0.8-1.0 fte)

Job description

Working as an Assistant Professor in HR studies in the department will involve developing your own research activities in line with the department’s research programme and in collaboration with members of our department and other TSB departments. More particularly, Assistant Professors are part of one or two research labs and conduct research related to the themes of these lab(s). It also involves coordinating at least one course, teaching in about two additional courses of 6 ECTS in our Bachelor or Master program, mentoring one Bachelor group, and supervising about 10 Bachelor and/or Master theses. Accordingly, time to be spend on research and teaching is 50/50. 


Working as an Assistant Professor with an education profile involves coordinating at least two courses, teaching in about three additional courses of 6 ECTS in our Bachelor or Master program, mentoring one Bachelor group, and supervising about 10 Bachelor and/or Master theses. It also involves being part of a Curriculum Team. Finally, it involves participating in team science in collaboration with members of our department through engaging in one of the research labs. Accordingly, time to be spend on teaching and education is 80/20.

Qualifications Assistant Professors in HR Studies
The HR Studies department is looking for two Assistant Professors who are excellent in both research and teaching. Although we are recruiting applicants with expertise on all four themes as outlined above, we are particularly keen to recruit Assistant Professors with expertise in strategic HRM and or strategic human capital. Applicants have experience in conducting high quality research as proven by published articles or a good pipeline of studies, and are willing to write grant proposals. Applicants should be strong in advanced and innovative quantitative and/or qualitative research techniques. Experience with analysing intensive longitudinal or multilevel data and with executive training of (HR) professionals and creating societal impact is appreciated.


Qualifications Assistant Professor with an education profile
The HR Studies department is looking for an Assistant Professor with an education profile who is excellent in teaching and enjoys conducting research. We are particularly keen to recruit applicants with expertise in (strategic) HRM and research methods/assessment. 


Qualifications for all positions 
Applicants should hold a PhD in HRM, business management, or social sciences. Applicants will need to be fluent in both written and spoken English and possess excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Applicants should have experience with lecturing large groups, but also with teaching interactive workgroups for smaller groups and supervising Bachelor and Master’s theses, and be willing to acquire or have acquired the Basic University Teaching Qualification (UTQ, in Dutch: BKO). 

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 18 months with the prospect of permanent employment.

Tilburg University is among the top Dutch employers and has an excellent policy concerning terms of employment. We offer an employment contract for 18 months during which you should show your competence in research and education. After a positive assessment of your performance this will be converted into a permanent contract. 

The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch universities (cao) applies. Depending on the candidates’ experience, the salary for the position of an Assistant Professor ranges between €3.821 and €5.943 gross per month based on scale 11-12 of the cao.
Tilburg University applies equal policies and actively promotes transparent pay for men and women by applying predetermined parameters based on the candidate’s experience. 
Academics from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The university will apply for such an allowance on their behalf.

The Department of Human Resource Studies is a well-established department with a strong reputation in academia. The department is well-known for its expertise in taking a balanced approach to strategic HRM. Research within the department is organised in four research labs on these core themes: 1) Aligning strategic HRM, wellbeing, and performance, 2) Health and well-being across working life, 3) Learning, development, and the strengths-based approach, and 4) Inclusive HRM. We aim for scientific (e.g., high quality publications) and societal impact on these themes. The department’s research program is part of TSB’s Herbert Simon Research Institute through which we collaborate multidisciplinary with other TSB departments on the themes of adaptive societies, organizations, and workers; healthy life span; personalized prevention and care; and more recently digitalization. The Tilburg Experience Sampling Center is part of this institute. TSB also aims to invest in large datasets at the team and organizational level. 


The Department of Human Resource Studies is the only department in the Netherlands that offers both a Bachelor and Master’s (including an extended Master) program in HR Studies. Our Master program has two inflow moments with a total inflow of about 170 students. The Master’s program is taught in English and the Dutch Bachelor program offers an international track in “People Management”. In our Master’s program, we offer electives that build on the expertise of our staff. Members of the department also participate in three multidisciplinary programs together with other TSB departments in which we teach HRS-related topics: the two-year Research Master program “Individual Differences and Assessment”, the Master track “Positive Psychology and Wellbeing”, and the Bachelor track “Global Management of Social Issues”. We also teach a number of courses on HRM at the Tilburg School of Economics and Management. These are all taught in English.
