We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague who, as assistant professor or associate professor, wants to help to build a research group and an education program in the dynamic and social important field of data protection an privacy law. In doing so, we work together with colleagues from different areas of law and from other faculties, such as specialists in artificial intelligence or data science from the faculty of Science.

As an assistant or associate professor, you develop and provide (mainly online) education for master's students in the field of privacy and data protection law, in particular in the field of ePrivacy. You are co-responsible for the development and implementation of courses in this area of ​​law, in preparation for the LL.M. in Data Protection and Privacy Law that is currently under development. You also supervise master theses.

You initiate, acquire and conduct scientific research in the field of privacy and data protection law, resulting in scientific publications. Further agreements can be made about the division between education and research.

You contribute your expertise in external networks and take the initiative in acquiring research and/or educational projects in this area. For the position of associate professor you will also be involved as co-supervisor of the PhD students and you will participate in administrative activities in and for the faculty of Law.

Preference will be given to a candidate who meets the job requirements. Assistant professors who do not yet fully meet the job requirements, but who consider themselves capable of fulfilling this position properly in the long term (three years), are also invited to apply.

Requirements
We expect you to have completed a law degree and have obtained your doctorate. You have proven knowledge and work experience within privacy and data protection law. You have excellent qualities in teaching knowledge and skills in the field concerned, in supervising students, and in developing education. You have knowledge of and affinity with innovation in scientific distance learning, in particular the use of ICT.

You have excellent research qualities, especially in the field of privacy and data protection law, as evidenced by relevant publications (peer reviewed). You also have experience in initiating and supervising research.

Experience in raising funds for research is recommended. You are result-oriented with a proactive attitude. In addition to working independently, you have the ability to work in a team and to build collaborative relationships. You have excellent communication skills, both verbally and in written, and you know how to present your proposals convincingly English and the ability to be able to communicate in Dutch is an explicit advantage. You are in possession of the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) or are willing to obtain it within a short period of time.

Appointment as an assistant professor requires a completed or forthcoming PhD, in the field of data protection or privacy law or an adjacent area of law. A completed PhD is required for appointment as an associate professor.

Fixed-term contract: for a period of 18 months with a prospect of a permanent position in the event of good performance.

The salary as assistant professor will be determined on the basis of your experience and qualifications, but will be in accordance with the general salary scales 11-12 of the CAO-NU. An indication of the maximum gross salary is € 5.943.- per month, for a full-time appointment.

Faculty of Law

The faculty of Law has approximately ninety employees and is currently undergoing major renewal. The lines are short, initiative and boldness are appreciated and there is plenty of room for the realization of good ideas. The faculty has two departments: the department of Private Law and the department of Public Law. The section Privacy and Data Protection Law is part of the department Private Law. Education and research are supported by the Education and Research Office.

The core of legal education consists of the Bachelor's degree program in Law (LL.B) and the Master's degree program in Law (LL.M) with five graduate programs (private law, criminal law, administrative law, constitutional law & legal theory and European & international law). The faculty is currently developing a master's program in Data Protection and Privacy Law (LL.M). In addition, there are switching programs. The faculty also provides several courses in the bachelor's, master's and PhD programs in collaboration with foreign partners (including FernUni in Hagen, Germany and UNED in Madrid, Spain) in the strategic partnership EDELNet. Faculty staff participate in other OU master's degree programs such as Health Sciences.

The faculty considers educational innovation important and is at the forefront within the OU with the development of serious games, podcasts and other innovative forms of online guidance. However, F2F education is certainly not forgotten: the study centers are well used for different types of education. In educational development and innovation, faculty teachers work closely with colleagues from the OU's educational expertise center, the ECO. The education is well appreciated by students: the faculty of Law is in first place in the National Student Survey 2021 and in joint first place in the Dutch university guide ‘Keuzegids Masters’.

The faculty of Law has a field-wide research program 'Law in an individualized network society'. The emphasis of the research is on positive law, but the faculty also has a strong group of Empirical Legal Studies (with professors in ELS, criminology and legal anthropology) and legal theory. There are ten full-time PhD students and eight postdocs working at the faculty. In addition, there are many external PhD students. Like its sister faculties, the OU has been participating in the Law Sector Plan since July 2019, in particular the spearhead of Transformative Effects of Globalization in Law in the Netherlands (with the UvA, Tilburg University and Maastricht University).
