Job description

We are looking for a new assistant professor who will collaboratively contribute to research and teaching in the area of machine learning (ML). The position is embedded in the Quantitative Data Analytics group. The group focuses on both fundamental and application-driven research in ML. We are looking for candidates with experience in the area of machine learning, with a special preference for those having expertise in one or more of the following areas: data-efficient ML methods, explainability of ML methods, and the utilization of domain knowledge in ML. We are interested in attracting an active researcher, able to perform ground-breaking research and to apply this research in relevant societal domains, including health-related analytics. On top, the candidate should be passionate about teaching. We also expect that bridges will be built with current research groups in the Department of Computer Science, in the Department of Mathematics, and the broader academic community in Amsterdam (including Amsterdam Medical Data Science, Amsterdam Data Science, the Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence, and the VU Campus Center for AI & Health).

Your duties
The tenure track position starts at the level of assistant professor in the areas of research, education, and management (40%:40%:20%), and contains the following duties:
  • Performing research in the field of machine learning;
  • Developing new course material for the Bachelor and Master Business Analytics, a joint program with the Department of Mathematics;
  • Supervise Bachelor, Master, and PhD students;
  • Initiating and contributing to research grant proposals; and
  • Contributing to administrative tasks.

Requirements

We will base our selection on the following components:
  • A PhD degree and post-doc experience in an area relevant to machine learning;
  • An international research profile, demonstrated by publications in relevant journals and conferences;
  • Academic teaching experience, preferably with experience in the supervision of MSc/PhD students;
  • Experience with attracting research funding, either individually or collaboratively.
  • Prior experience within the health domain would be an asset.

Conditions of employment

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3.821 (scale 11) and a maximum €5,230 (scale 11), depending on your education and experience. The job profile: assistant professor is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE.

This is a tenure track position; the initial appointment will be for a period of 5 (five) years. Based on performance indicators agreed at the start of the appointment, a tenure track position will lead to a tenured position of Assistant Professor 1 (scale 12) in a period of maximally 5 years. A midterm review will take place about 2.5 years after the starting date. The final review and decision for tenure will take place in the fifth year of the appointment.

A tenured staff member is required to make significant contributions to the research and education programmes, and to spend effort on specific tasks at the department level.
