Job description

The Department of Media Studies is looking for candidates [experienced and early career] to teach in the BA en MA programmes, specifically in the track, New Media & Digital Culture. The candidate can also be asked to teach courses in other areas of Media Studies. The ideal candidate would have considerable knowledge of the study of New Media and Digital Culture in the humanities, especially in the areas of digital research methods and critical internet culture. He or she will also have demonstrable affinity with the media arts, media history, media theory and social media critique. Up-to-date web vernacular knowledge is desirable. Practical experience in working analytically with online platforms (e.g., Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, 4chan, Telegram, TikTok) and web-based applications and tools (e.g., social media analytics) is also desirable.

What are you going to do

The Lecturers will teach mainly in the bachelor's degree in courses concerned with such topics as data journalism, media theory, digital practices, digital methods and information analytics, media history as well as contemporary themes in digital culture, all in the program of Media and Information. The Lecturers also may teach in the master’s degree program and supervise theses.

You will contribute to the further development of education in the broad field of Media Studies, and specifically New Media & Digital Culture. You will provide inspiring lectures and tutorials. Your teaching duties also would include supervising theses and contributing to the renewal and improvement of the curriculum.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • developing, coordinating, and teaching courses within the bachelor/master tracks, in cooperation with the staff of the Media and Information programme;
  • supervising bachelor and master theses;
  • keeping track of relevant scholarship and integrate new insights into teaching;
  • playing an active role in the development and implementation of improvements and innovations in course pedagogy and content;
  • carrying out administrative and management tasks;
  • taking part in committees and working groups.

What do we require

Your experience and profile

  • either a completed or nearly completed PhD in Media Studies or related discipline;
  • or a completed Master’s degree in Media Studies or a related discipline; or a Dutch Research Master’s degree in Media Studies or related discipline;
  • experience with teaching in Bachelor and Master programmes at an academic level, specifically in Media Studies;
  • experience with digital and audio-visual equipment;
  • affinity with ICTs in academic education;
  • team spirit and a willingness to participate in activities of the New Media team;
  • willing and able to cooperate in multidisciplinary projects;
  • administrative experience and skills;
  • University Teaching Qualification, or willingness to acquire it within two years.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 24 months.

Our offer

We offer a temporary employment contract for a period of two years with a probationary period of two months. The employment contract is for 27 hours per week. Preferred starting date is 15 August 2022.

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and relevant experience, ranges between €2,846 to €5,230. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
