Job description

Are you exceptionally interested in interdisciplinary fundamental research? Are you a motivated young researcher? We are seeking a PhD candidate who is interested in the molecular physics of large organic species within the framework of interstellar and prebiotic chemistry.

What are you going to do

You will study the photochemistry and spectral fingerprints of large organic species that are expected to exist in the interstellar medium and relate these to astronomical observations. You will perform cold gas-phase spectroscopy experiments with the aid of tunable IR and UV lasers. This entails improving the available setups to push the boundaries for the next generation of experiments. Additionally, you will perform quantum chemical calculations to guide and interpret experiment. The project will be embedded within existing networks funded by the Dutch Science Organization (NWO) - such as the Dutch Astrochemistry Network (DAN), Planetary and Exoplanetary Science (PEPSci), and Origins Center - to ensure necessary interdisciplinary interplay with observers, theoreticians, and experimentalists within these fields. You are expected to play an active role within the team and the network and interact regularly with the other (young) researchers.

Your tasks will be
  • perform experiments using vacuum systems, apparatus, and lasers;
  • initiate and carry out experimental developments;
  • analyse, interpret, and predict measurements using various software tools;
  • contribute to and stay informed of the frontier science within the field by writing papers and keeping up to date with literature;
  • play an active role within the department and the network.

Specifications

University of Amsterdam (UvA)

Requirements

  • MSc degree in physics, physical chemistry or adjacent fields;
  • An affiliation with experimental challenges and techniques (e.g. laser and vacuum systems, cooling techniques, and/or high-resolution mass spectrometry and spectroscopy techniques);
  • Ability to work both on a fundamental and an interdisciplinary level;
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member;
  • Ability to take initiative and have good time management skills;
  • Excellent communication skills in oral and written English.

Conditions of employment

A temporary contract for 38 hours per week, preferably starting as soon as possible, for the duration of four years (the initial contract will be for a period of 18 months and after satisfactory evaluation it will be extended to a total duration of four years). This should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). We will draft an educational plan that includes attendance of courses and (international) meetings. We also expect you to assist in teaching undergraduates and Masters students.

Based on a full-time contract (38 hours per week) the gross monthly salary will range from €2,443 in the first year to €3,122 (scale P) in the last year. This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. A favourable tax agreement, the '30% ruling', may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.

The UvA offers excellent possibilities for further professional development and education.

What else do we offer
  • a function in which initiative is strongly valued;
  • an enthusiastic team that welcomes new members;
  • an inspiring academic and international environment in the heart of Amsterdam.

Employer

Faculty of Science

The Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) is one of eight institutes of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) Faculty of Science. HIMS performs internationally recognized chemistry and molecular research, curiosity driven as well as application driven. This is done in close cooperation with the chemical, flavor & food, medical and high-tech industries. Research is organized into four themes: Analytical Chemistry, Computational Chemistry, Synthesis & Catalysis and Molecular Photonics.

The Molecular Photonics Group aims to advance the fundamental knowledge of the dynamics of excited states in molecules and nano-sized objects, and to contribute with its expertise to applications of the photosciences.

To work at the University of Amsterdam is to work in a discerning, independent, creative, innovative and international climate characterized by an open atmosphere and a genuine engagement with the city of Amsterdam and society. Here you can read more about working at the University of Amsterdam.
