The department of Criminal Law of the Tilburg Law School is looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated individual with disciplinary expertise in Criminal Law and/or Criminology, and the experience and creativity to participate in innovative course delivery, assessment, and course design. The candidate has completed a PhD and conducts research into areas that align with the department’s research plan (Signature Plan) on Law and Security. The Department aims to fill the post as from October 1st, 2022 or earlier when possible. 

You will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in criminal law and supervising (under)graduate dissertations as part of the Dutch Law programme and the Global Law Bachelor. You will work with colleagues in delivering the curriculum and have experience with interactive teaching and use of technology-enhanced learning. You will be course leader/coordinator of at least one module. You participate in research-led teaching, including promoting and developing student competencies related to research, and incorporate your disciplinary expertise into your teaching. As a researcher you establish and maintain expertise at the forefront of your expertise/disciplinary area and you contribute to the department’s research plan (Signature Plan) ‘Law and Security’. Ideally, your research has a multidisciplinary and international perspective. You are willing and able to carry out administrative tasks within the department, the School or the university. As an Assistant professor you will have:

• A PhD in criminal law or criminology;
• Sufficient background in criminal law to teach criminal law courses (for criminologists);
• Sufficient background in criminology to teach criminology courses (for lawyers);
• Experience of teaching in criminal law or criminology in Higher Education;
• University Teaching Qualification (BKO or equivalent) or the willingness to get one;
• Excellent communication skills to enable knowledge transfer in a clear, enthusiastic, open and inclusive manner;
• A solid research profile evidenced through publications;
• The ability to contribute to the Department’s Signature Plan on Law and Security;
• Affinity with interdisciplinary and international research;
• A collaborative attitude based on values of inclusion, equality and respect;
• Non-Dutch speaking candidates are expected to learn Dutch within 18 months after being appointed, and be able to contribute to Dutch language criminal law courses and/or supervise Dutch language (under)graduate theses.

This is a position for 0,8-1,0 FTE (32-40 hours per week). 

The salary amounts to a minimum of € 3.821 and a maximum of € 5.230 gross per month for full-time employment, based on UFO profile Assistant Professor 2 and salary scale 11 of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. Tilburg University uses a neutral remuneration system for salary scaling that is based on relevant education and work experience.

This is a vacancy for a permanent position in accordance with Article 2.3 paragraph 1 of the CLA for Dutch universities and concerns a temporary employment contract with permanent prospects. You will initially be given a temporary employment contract for the duration of 12 (internal candidates) or 18 months (external candidates), with the prospect of permanent employment.

You are entitled to a vacation allowance of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% of your gross annual income. If you work 40 hours per week, you will receive 41 paid days of leave per year.

Department of Criminal Law

The Department of Criminal Law has a multidisciplinary composition in which both criminal (procedural) law and social science approaches to crime and victimization have a place, and it provides education and research in the field of criminal law, criminology, victimology, and forensic psychiatry. Currently, the Department has about 30 permanent staff members. Particular value is placed on collaboration, both within the Department and with colleagues within Tilburg Law School and other Schools. The Department has an informal culture, where equality and providing an inspiring and safe working environment are paramount. Providing excellent education and conducting challenging research are seen as two main tasks that can only be accomplished together.
