Job description

The successful candidate is expected to:
Research

  • Carry out internationally oriented, empirical research that is publishable in established international refereed journals;
  • Contribute actively to the development of the Department’s research in the field of sociology of arts and culture;
  • Contribute to the acquisition of external research funding from national and international funding agencies and other organizations;

Teaching

  • Perform teaching and supervising tasks for the International Bachelor Arts and Culture Studies programme (IBACS) and the international Master specialization Arts, Culture and Society;
  • Make a substantial contribution to the development of both bachelor and master level courses in the broader field of sociology of arts and culture;
  • Depending on the successful candidate’s profile, teaching will include courses in the sociology of arts and culture, cultural and creative industries, arts participation and audiences, and social science methods. Furthermore, the candidate will likely also teach courses in the Research Master Sociology of Culture, Media, and the Arts.

Service

  • Contribute to the management tasks of the Department;
  • Take an active part in relevant national and international academic networks and organizations;
  • Develop and maintain close contacts with relevant organizations and professionals in the field of arts and culture.

Requirements

To be eligible, a candidate must have:

  • A PhD degree in (cultural) sociology or a related field and rank among the top 10-20% of their peer group;
  • A strong research track record, including publications in international refereed journals;
  • Prior teaching experience, preferably in an international environment, with the well-documented ability to inspire students from undergraduate to postgraduate levels.
    Candidates who don’t possess a formal teaching qualification, are expected to acquire it within two years (according to the standards of the so-called BKO-University Teaching Qualification);
  • A track record in making societal impact, for example having worked with societal partners, presented research to a non-academic audience;
  • Excellent proficiency in spoken and written English.
    (Non-English speakers have to meet the C1-standards of the Common European Framework (CEFR).

Furthermore, we are looking for:

  • Extensive knowledge of - and ample experience with - a wide range of social science research methods;
  • Strong communication and organizational skills and the ability to co-operate with others and perform well within an international and diverse team;
  • A well-documented and sustained interest in arts and culture; 

Conditions of employment

Employment starts preferably on 1 September 2022 and will run for a fixed term of 18 months, to be converted into a permanent contract contingent upon an excellent performance.

The conditions of employment correspond with the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch Universities (CAO NU). Salary is subject to training and experience and corresponds to Scale 11 or 12 CAO NU, with a maximum of € 5.943,- gross per month on a 38 hour per week contract. In accordance with the CAO NU a placement in a preliminary salary scale is possible for the maximum duration of two years.

In addition, we offer an 8% holiday allowance, an end-of-year payment of 8.3%, and a very generous paid leave scheme. The Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication

The Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) is part of Erasmus University Rotterdam. The school has three departments: History,  Arts and Culture and Media & Communication. There are approximately 2500 students and over 220 employees.

ESHCC offers high quality education, based on scientific research, at the intersection of the Humanities and Social Sciences. We teach our ambitious, Dutch and international students in a stimulating learning environment.
