PHD candidate graduate student in analysis

The Mathematical Institute of the Faculty of Science, Leiden University, is looking for a PhD candidate

Vacancy number: 22-344

Job description
The Mathematical Institute of Leiden University invites applicants for a PhD position with Martina Chirilus-Bruckner in analysis. You will work on advancing mathematical theory for localized structures in nonlinear PDEs with spatially varying coefficients (possibly also complementing rigorous analysis with numerical explorations). Depending on your background and interests, the project will also have a component venturing out into one of the many applications.
The Analysis and Dynamical Systems Group at Leiden University consists of numerous internationally renowed researchers in a variety of fields including dynamical systems, (det. and stoch. ) PDEs, lattice equations, functional analysis, mathematical biology and mathematics of pharmacology. On a national level you will be embedded in the NDNS+ Mathematics cluster (which regulary organizes scientific events for PhD students). On an international level the research theme belongs to global streams like “Nonlinear Waves and Coherent Structures” to which one of the large biannual SIAM (Society of Applied Mathematics) conferences is dedicated.
The position comes with some light teaching duties.

The Faculty of Science is a world-class faculty where staff and students work together in a dynamic international environment. It is a faculty where personal and academic development are top priorities. Our people are committed to expand fundamental knowledge by curiosity and to look beyond the borders of their own discipline; their aim is to benefit science, and to make a contribution to addressing the major societal challenges of the future.

The research carried out at the Faculty of Science is very diverse, ranging from mathematics, information science, astronomy, physics, chemistry and bio-pharmaceutical sciences to biology and environmental sciences. The research activities are organised in eight institutes. These institutes offer eight bachelor’s and twelve master’s programmes. The faculty has grown strongly in recent years and now has more than 2,300 staff and almost 5,000 students. We are located at the heart of Leiden’s Bio Science Park, one of Europe’s biggest science parks, where university and business life come together.

Mathematical Institute
The Mathematical Institute is one of the eight institutes within the Faculty of Science. It is responsible for the research and education in mathematics and statistics at Leiden University. The institute has a strong international orientation. Its mission is to perform high quality research at the frontiers of mathematical knowledge, and to educate future generations of mathematicians and statisticians in a friendly but challenging environment.
MI students have named MI Top Teaching for the fifth year in a row.
