The Advanced Research Center for Nanolithography (ARCNL) is a public-private partnership between NWO, University of Amsterdam, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, University of Groningen and the semiconductor equipment manufacturer ASML. ARCNL combines the best of two worlds and contributes through fundamental physics and chemistry research to future industrial applications in the semiconductor industry: Science with a mission. ARCNL is looking for a new director.

Job description

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a researcher with a strong international reputation in an area relevant for the mission of ARCNL and its research program. You should be a leader for the ARCNL scientific and support staff, and your vision on research and management should fit the organizational structure and atmosphere of the institute.

As the director, you have a clear vision for the future scientific directions of ARCNL and you serve as a lynchpin between ARCNL stakeholders to ensure alignment on ARCNL’s mission, strategy and objectives. You have a keen eye and enthusiasm for possible applications of fundamental research and collaborations with industry, especially –but not exclusively– with ASML.

At an (inter)national level, you fulfil the role of representing ARCNL and  ARCNL’s research program. It will therefore be a definite advantage if you combine the directorship with a research component within your own or one of the existing ARCNL research groups.

 What will you do?

You are the figurehead of ARCNL and are responsible for the overall and day-to-day management of the institute. You give direction to the institute at a strategic level and integrally manage it to realize ARCNL’s strategic, tactical and operational objectives.

Requirements

What do we expect?

  • An international reputation as a high-profile researcher in a research field relevant for ARCNL.
  • Experience with (close) collaborations with industry.
  • Adept in converting results in fundamental research into knowledge for applications in industry.
  • Experienced in providing result-oriented and situational leadership.
  • An effective networker in the Dutch and international research landscape.
  • You are sensitive to the organization’s needs and supervise the interactions with relevant stakeholders.
  • You are an inspiring leader who makes connections and ensures an inclusive and motivating work environment.

Conditions of employment

What do we offer?

A contract for 32-40 hours per week with Amsterdam as your work location. You will be employed by NWO-I and will be appointed as a professor at both the University of Amsterdam and VU Amsterdam. NWO-I provides a tenured appointment and an initial commission as a director for a period of five years with the possibility of extending the commission by an additional period of five years. After that, it is possible to continue working within NWO-I in a different position. We offer a competitive research package when applicable.

The gross monthly salary –dependent on experience– ranges from € 7,839 to € 10,405 (scale 18 in the Dutch collective labor agreement for research institutes), with an additional 8% holiday allowance and 8.33% year-end bonus. NWO-I offers a flexible set of secondary employment conditions, including both retirement and work disability pensions via the national Civil Pension Fund ABP.

Employer

ARCNL

Who are we?

ARCNL is a public-private partnership between the Dutch Research Council (NWO), University of Amsterdam (UvA), VU Amsterdam and semiconductor equipment manufacturer ASML. As of 1 January 2022, the University of Groningen (RUG) has become an associate partner in the partnership. The institute is located at the Amsterdam Science Park. ARCNL is one of the nine research institutes grouped under the umbrella organization Stichting NWO-I.

As a research institute, ARCNL plays its role in the academic community. ARCNL researchers publish their research results in renowned scientific journals, and the group leaders actively fulfill roles at the universities involved, for example by contributing to the education program. At the same time, the research questions are driven by the applications of industrial partner ASML, who also benefits from the resulting stream of technological ideas. By being in this unique position, ARCNL is able to contribute to future technological developments.

At ARCNL, about seventy researchers do fundamental research in research areas relevant for nanolithography (in particular, physics and physical chemistry, including a wide variety of atomic, molecular and optical processes). The source of inspiration for this research is the semiconductor industry, with major developments such as EUV lithography equipment, with the aim to understand and control the physical processes involved.
