The Faculty of Humanities is looking for a historical musicologist with a strong, international reputation and interdisciplinary outlook. The successful candidate has outstanding qualifications in research and teaching, is conversant with the latest developments in musicology and has an interdisciplinary vision for the field; an additional area of expertise complementing historical musicology is an asset. The chair can articulate an inspired ambition in line with the strategic plans of the department, the Faculty of Humanities, and Utrecht University at large.

The chair plays a pro-active, leading role in teaching and research and supports innovations in line with current national and international developments in musicology and interdisciplinary research. The chair is also expected to initiate activities that enhance the visibility of (historical) musicology in contemporary society and to play a central role in furthering the contacts of the musicology programmes with conservatoires and other relevant music institutions in the Netherlands and abroad.

Requirements

The candidate we are looking for has a strong publication record, proven abilities to generate external funding, and an extensive international network. The successful candidate has specialist knowledge of specific periods or aspects of music history yet is also able to conduct and supervise research and teaching across a broad range of topics in historical musicology. In addition, we are looking for a new colleague who firmly believes in interdisciplinary collaboration, teamwork, and collegiality/ shared responsibility and who can inspire colleagues in musicology as well as in other fields within the department, faculty, and beyond.  

The new chair will be positioned in the Department of Media and Culture Studies (MCW). Our department, which is housed in the historic centre of Utrecht, has a staff that consist of people of a variety of backgrounds, skills, and views. As a department, we are committed to support our staff and to foster various forms of interdisciplinary collaboration. In our department, we study a wide range of media as well as cultural and artistic expressions, also in their intermedial relations. We interpret culture as a dynamic combination of artistic, creative, and everyday activities that people use to shape their identities, and within which social processes, structures and institutions are shaped.

The successful candidate:
  • is an experienced and internationally established senior researcher in the field of historical musicology, as demonstrated by a completed PhD and a substantial peer-reviewed scholarly output in leading academic journals and distinguished book publications;
  • has a successful track record in attracting substantial research subsidies from external funding bodies;
  • has substantial experience in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate level as well as experience in developing teaching curricula;
  • has experience in supervising PhD candidates and junior researchers in an inspiring and effective way;
  • has an extensive network in academia and beyond, and is able to engage this network in order to develop research projects;
  • has excellent communication skills and is capable of inspiring a positive team spirit;
  • is willing and able to take on organizational and managerial responsibilities at the departmental level, and beyond;
  • is able to teach in Dutch and English. International candidates will be assisted in acquiring Dutch language skills during the first two years of their appointment.

Conditions of employment

We offer a permanent position with an appointment as professor for initially five years. After positive evaluation, the appointment will be turned in to a permanent one.
The minimum gross salary is € 6,099 and the maximum gross salary is € 8,881 (scale H2 of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities) per month, at a full-time employment.

Besides that, you will receive a holiday allowance of 8 % and a year-end bonus of 8.3 %.
