Are you an enthusiastic scholar in the field of social sciences and/or inter-disciplinary environmental and natural resource studies? Do you have an interest in social and governance aspects of conservation? Then this could be the ideal PhD position for you!

As a PhD researcher of the Forest and Nature Conservation Policy Group, you will be embedded in the European collaborative research project WildE (Climate-smart rewilding: ecological restoration for climate change mitigation, adaptation and biodiversity support in Europe) consisting of 22 academic and practice partners working together on exploring the potential of rewilding as a conservation strategy in Europe.

In this project you will work on a large scale representative European household survey in 29 countries to assess public perceptions of nature and conservation strategies across the continent, and will conduct multivariate statistical analysis of the data set. As part of a small research team, you will also do qualitative case studies on rewilding related conflicts within the EU, involving fieldwork in different countries. Being part of an international and interdisciplinary research consortium, there will be opportunities to collaborate with partners from other countries and disciplines in the exploration of socio-economic and ecological aspects of rewilding.

• a completed Master's degree (before starting the PhD) to a high standard in the field of social sciences and/or inter-disciplinary environmental and natural resource studies;
• skills in relevant research methods, and excellent skills in scientific writing;
• keen interest in conducting empirical research, relevant fieldwork experience would be considered an advantage;
• keen interest and ideally experience with the topic
• keen interest in international research collaboration and inter- or transdisciplinary research;
• for this position your command of the English language is expected to be at C1 level.

The gross salary for the first year is € 2.443,- per month rising to € 3.122,- in the fourth year in according to the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) (scale P). This is based on a full-time working week of 38 hours. We offer a temporary contract for 18 months which will be extended for the duration of the project (48 months in total) if you perform well.
