The faculty of mechanical engineering, department of Maritime and Transport Technology (M&TT;) is seeking a full professor and section lead Ship Design, Production and Operations (SDPO). Currently, SDPO is a section consisting of 5-6 assistant and associate professors and more than 20 PhD students. The focus of the section is on improving the design, production, operation and dismantling of ships, primarily aimed at those types of ships designed, built and operated within the European Union and the Netherlands. The section has strong connections with industry, as well as good cooperation’s with other universities and research institutes.

Job description

The chair and the department
The chair is positioned in the department of Maritime and Transport Technology (MTT), one of the seven departments within the faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering (3mE).

At this moment the department MTT comprises of five sections, which are:
- Ship Hydromechanics
- Ship Design, Production and Operation
- Transport Engineering & Logistics
- Dredging Engineering
- Ship and Offshore Structures.

The research objective of M&TT is to carry out research in order to improve the competitive position of the Netherlands and European maritime, dredging and transport sector to be more efficient, safe and sustainable. Typical research at MTT combines fundamental and conceptual research on one hand and the development of new design and production concepts and solutions on the other hand. A major part of the research is a combination of mathematical modelling and experimental validation, for which state-of-the-art computer facilities, experimental instrumentation and crucial laboratory infrastructure are available in the department.

Research area of the new chair
The maritime sector is currently undergoing three simultaneous challenges related to:

  1. the zero-emission energy transition (including, but not limited to: future marine power and propulsion concepts and their implications on vessel design; or economic, social, and operational performance assessment of new fuels for ships),
  2. the autonomous and unmanned transition (including, but not limited to: technical, economic, social, and operational performance assessment of autonomous and unmanned ships),
  3. the digital transition (including, but not limited to: digital engineering, concurrent design, model-based systems engineering (MBSE), Industry 4.0, or big data and AI).

The department is interested in research in all aspects related to how these three transitions will change the way ships are designed, produced, operated and decommissioned. The full professor should have a holistic, multi-disciplinary, or systems perspective of how to address these challenges, as they relate to Dutch and European maritime interests.

The candidate should have her/his own international visible research line, demonstrated by publications in the leading journals in the field. This research line should fit in one of the aforementioned research areas. The new professor is responsible for the  coaching of  the existing staff and support them with the development of new research lines.

Education
Delft University of Technology is the only university in the Netherlands that offers academic science and engineering programs for maritime and offshore application. At the bachelor of science level, Ship design and operation is embedded in the bachelor program of Maritime Technology by providing first, second- and third-year courses and the facilities needed for demonstrations and Bachelor projects. In principle, this bachelor program is taught in the Dutch language. However, under certain conditions it is allowed to teach in the English language as well.

Valorization / Utilization
The candidate is expected to initiate and execute national and international research programs (NWO, EU, etc.), in close collaboration with academic colleagues, research institutes, and industrial partners. The chair is expected to build and uphold an excellent network with the maritime industry.

Management
The chair is responsible for the management of the section with a focus on high quality research and education. The candidate coaches and supervises the staff members and technicians. The chair is a member of the management team of the department. In addition, the candidate is expected to participate in relevant external committees and panels that are relevant for the chair.

The candidate

  • Has obtained a PhD, and has a strong scientific background in ship design, production, or operations; systems engineering; multi-disciplinary engineering design; mechanical engineering; or other fields related to the knowledge areas.
  • Translates developments in the research field into (inter)national research programs.
  • Is an authority in their own field of research, as demonstrated by academic publications in peer reviewed scientific journals relevant to the field.
  • Has the ability to develop and maintain a strong maritime network within the Netherlands, European Union, and globally.
  • Has a clear vision on modern engineering education, including the capacity to define topics and supervise at the bachelor and MSc levels. Has deep and broad professional knowledge and teaching experience.
  • Coaches associate professors, assistant professors, postdocs, and PhD candidates both in their academic work and their personal and career development.
  • Contributes to the organizational tasks at the department, faculty, and TU Delft university level.
  • Is proficient in English, and, for foreign candidates, the willingness to learn Dutch.
  • Has experience with the academic environment and is aware of inclusiveness values of TU Delft.
