What you'll be doing

You will be leading three developers (Integration Systems Team, IST) focused on Python and Javascript-based services and applications. Within DANS, you will be joining 20 colleagues in the Technology Section and report to the CTO.

The focus of the development work is on creation and implementation of API services, web applications, and workflow integration in the field of Research Data Management. The IST is participating in several national and EU-funded projects, and as such, you will collaborate and interact with users, developers and systems architects within the broader EU context of Research Data Management. Your own work will focus on solution design in an Agile development environment, coding and implementation of selected components and elements, and code review. The CTO, in collaboration with others, provides high-level requirements, specifications and architecture for the team's work.

What we expect

You have ideally completed a tertiary education in Computer Science or Engineering, but individuals with extensive coding experience - in the order of 5 years or more - will also be welcome to apply.

You are motivated, flexible, and focused on results. Workable knowledge of the English language will be an asset; proficiency in Dutch is expected. You are knowledgeable about and demonstrably experienced in the following:
  • Project-based work in a team environment
  • Python and Javascript programming
  • Full-stack developer with good front-end skills and experience
  • Git and repository/ package management
  • Standardised APIs, such as OpenAPI and Swagger
  • Test-driven and agile development, JIRA experience
  • Databases:
    • Relational Databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, …)
    • NoSQL Databases
  • Frameworks and Libraries
    • Django
  • Other
    • Kubernetes or Docker
Experience with any of the following will be an asset:
  • Team lead experience and distributed team collaboration
  • Working with automated workflow, for example using Apache Airflow
  • Experience with graph databases (GraphDB, neo4j, and similar) and knowledge representation using triples (RDF, SKOS)
  • Exposure to research data infrastructure and standards-driven systems - especially metadata standards for one or more scientific domains
  • Working with Django or similar frameworks, experience using vue.js
  • Experience with Systems documentation and reporting

Conditions of employment

Terms of employment
Depending on education and experience the minimum salary is € 4.818 and the maximum salary is € 6.181 gross per month for a full-time appointment (scale12 cao Nederlandse Universiteiten/KNAW). This is exclusive of 8% vacation allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, travel allowance, internet allowance, home working allowance and pension accrual with ABP.

The KNAW offers its staff an excellent package of secondary benefits. A package that meets the different needs of employees depending on their stage of life, lifestyle or career ambitions. For example, by working an extra two hours a week, it is possible to increase the number of days off from 29 to 41 days a year (with full-time employment).
