Within the chair group Crop Physiology, we offer an assistant professor position. The position includes teaching (45%), research (45%) and general management tasks and service to society (10%). The teaching will be in the area of crop science and crop physiology and will be at the level of BSc, MSc and PhD students. Supervision of PhD candidates is also a major part of the job. The candidate will develop, in consultation and collaboration with the other team members, her/his own research line that matches the long-term strategy of both the Crop Physiology team and the Centre for Crop Systems Analysis in which Crop Physiology is embedded. An integrated approach including a combination of experimentation, data analysis and modelling will be required. Activities include writing research proposals for external funding.

Profile
We seek a highly motivated plant/crop physiologist with an interest in contributing to sustainable crop systems on the basis of in-depth research on crop ecophysiology. We are particularly interested in research aiming to integrate knowledge across scales from genes to cropping systems, from roots to canopies and from controlled to field environments, to complement the group's research into understanding the ecophysiology of crops under diverse environmental and management conditions. The ideal candidate has a strong interest and ambition to develop expertise in utilizing sensing technologies (e.g., LiDAR, SIF, hyperspectral and thermal imaging, airborne imagery). The candidate's research focus should ideally encompass managing and analyzing large, complex datasets. The candidate's research focus should be complementary to ongoing research in the field and involve collaboration with public and private partners, both in the temperate and (semi-)tropical regions. For example, we have a world-wide network with CGIAR institutions, universities, and private companies on all continents.

We are looking for a candidate with the following qualifications:
You should have a strong track record in research, to be demonstrated by work done in PhD and postdoc positions. You are a motivating teacher with proven experience. You have demonstrated experience and have been successful in obtaining research grants in competitive funding schemes to fund your own research. You are a team player and team builder with a keen interest in collaborative research and willing to contribute to the general tasks of the chair group.

You will strengthen our research capacity in the knowledge chain from lower integration levels (e.g., genetics, molecular plant physiology, metabolomics, molecular biology), via physiology at the crop level to crop ecology. These fields currently generate large data sets now available in databases at low integration levels. The group's challenge is to connect these data across scales and potentially identify novel physiological mechanisms of crop performance under current and future climatic conditions.

In summary we look for:

• A PhD in the area of plant/crop physiology or crop science
• Interest in sensing technologies and the analysis of large datasets
• Proven affinity to and experience in teaching
• Highly developed interpersonal and intercultural skills
• A strong publication record in top quality journals
• Well-developed experimental, data analysis and modelling skills
• Preferably, experience in acquiring and managing externally funded research projects

Depending on your experience, we offer a competitive gross salary of between € 3.821,- and € 5.230,- per month based on a a full-time working week of 38 hours and in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU).
