Employer

The Nijmegen School of Management (NSM) is an academic centre of research and higher education, focusing on institutional and managerial issues within complex organisations. There are seven disciplines within NSM: Business Administration, Public Administration, Political Science, Economics and Business Economics, Social and Political Sciences of the Environment, Human Geography, and Spatial Planning. NSM strives for a multidisciplinary approach. The educational programme is characterised by small-scale teaching and provides a stimulating learning environment with an emphasis on the development of academic skills. NSM employs 300 FTEs, 75% of whom are academics. Currently, NSM has approximately 5,000 students. NSM's research activities fall under the responsibility of the interdisciplinary Institute for Management Research (IMR). Under the motto 'Creating Knowledge for Society', IMR focuses on academic research into the development, design and effectiveness of the public and private structures that regulate, govern or manage human interactions. In the new mission of the Faculty this is further specified as contributing to responsible governance for sustainable societies.
The Department of Political Science consists of scholars in International Relations, Comparative Politics, Political Theory and Conflict Studies. The department offers a Bachelor's programme in Political Science and seven Master's degree tracks (disciplinary and interdisciplinary), each leading to a Master's degree in Political Science. The educational programme is characterised by small-scale teaching and provides a stimulating learning environment with an emphasis on the development of academic skills. The Department of Political Science conducts cutting edge research into the challenges that citizens, practitioners and policymakers face today. Research is organised in two distinct, yet related, research themes: Sustainable Democracy and Conflict at the Crossroads of the Global and the National. The former addresses legitimacy challenges faced by democracies today, the consequences of those challenges for democratic stability and erosion, and the institutional change that may help to tackle such challenges and revitalise democracy. The latter focuses on how the contestation of the legitimacy of global, regional and national institutions may lead to major violent and non-violent conflict and on how such conflict may invoke institutional change.

The department’s research programme thus creates crucial knowledge contributing to the United Nations’ Strategic Development Goals. Each theme represents cutting edge research that has attracted external funding and has established cooperation with societal stakeholders. Each theme also offers disciplinary building blocks for five multidisciplinary Hot Spots at IMR: Sustainable Democracy, GLOCAL, Gender and Power in Politics and Management and EUROPAL.
