The Medical Faculty of the University of Basel invite applications for the position of Professor of Exercise Science with a focus on “Applied Exercise Physiology” (open-rank) starting May 1, 2023 or by appointment.

Job description

The DSBG is part of the Faculty of Medicine and is the only institution in Switzerland with a focus on Sports, Exercise and Health. As such, it represents a unique Center of Excellence with a focus on "Prevention, rehabilitation, and health promotion through sports and exercise".

The research and teaching activities of the Department of Exercise and Sports Science focuses on the development, research, and implementation of physical activity interventions in healthy populations and in those with pre-existing conditions (children, adults, seniors). Special emphasis is placed on prevention-oriented exercise interventions with a personalized approach. The methodological core competencies encompass biomechanical, neuromuscular, neurophysiological and performance physiological measurement methods. 

Your position

The professorship will further develop the DSBG's orientation on health by focusing on "Applied Exercise Physiology ". In particular, the focus is placed on (1) the relationship between physical activity and exercise training on physiological processes, health and physical well-being, primarily in healthy individuals, but also in individuals with pre-existing conditions, and (2) the promotion of sports and physical activity in society through translational projects (from the laboratory to population). Willingness to continue the curricular content of the Department of Exercise and Sports Science in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs is expected, as well as active participation in academic governance on all levels.

Requirements

  • You have acquired a habilitation or equivalent degree (PhD) in exercise or sports science.
  • You possess excellent scientific qualifications, backed by high-ranking international peer-reviewed publications as well as successful acquisition of competitive third-party funding.
  • You have gained extensive experience in teaching at a university.
  • You can draw on an established international network in research and have experience in designing and leading interdisciplinary research projects while managing junior researchers.
  • An ability to connect to the work and research priorities of the DSBG is prerequisite.
