Looking for a position that focuses on the design and application of AI for re-shaping healthcare systems, balancing organizational and technical aspects?

Job description

The Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management (TPM) invites applications for an assistant / associate professor in AI for Healthcare Systems. The position is established within the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) section, which is part of the Engineering Systems and Services (ESS) department. ESS hosts expertise in ICT (AI, edge computing, distributed systems), energy and industry, health, logistics, and mobility. By combining domain expertise with systems thinking, ESS addresses socio-technical challenges, such as digital innovations for energy, industry, health, logistics and mobility systems.

In this position, you have the opportunity to:

  • Contribute to the educational programmes of the department
  • Perform research in the field of AI for Healthcare Systems
  • Build your research vision, and become a thought leader on the subject
  • Develop interdisciplinary research partnerships within and outside the university

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) section offers an assistant / associate professor position in AI for Healthcare Systems. The position consists of teaching (40%), research (40%) and

organization/management (20%). This is a new position. Advances in AI and related technologies are transforming healthcare (e.g. predictive/personalized treatments or automated analysis of medical imaging). Such applications affect how healthcare is organized, for instance affecting business models or relations between care providers and patients. AI applications also create societal challenges regarding security, privacy, trust, data quality, transparency, resilience, and explainability. Stakeholders have different views on what is desirable and feasible. Stakeholder interests and conflicting values such as efficiency, trustworthiness, security and business interests must be addressed. AI solutions cannot be designed in isolation and must be embedded within stakeholders’ architectures, processes, platforms and infrastructures. Therefore, designing AI for healthcare requires a systemic and architectural perspective.

This position focuses on the design and application of AI for re-shaping healthcare systems, balancing organizational and technical aspects. For instance: creating new designs or architectures to apply AI (or related technologies) in healthcare systems, or new methods to design and engineer such solutions. Solutions could address a sub-part of the healthcare system (e.g., medical or consumer health). We look for applicants that want to conduct interdisciplinary, socio-technical research. The research should be engineering/design oriented. You evaluate solutions based on societal values (e.g. safety, efficiency, quality of care).

The ICT section is a fast-growing group with an international reputation, driven by interdisciplinary collaboration. Our research relates to data and AI (e.g. Edge AI, blockchain, platforms, and responsible analytics). Application areas include digital healthcare, connected vehicles, digital infrastructures, and digital public services. We take an architecting and engineering perspective, considering how new technological paradigms fit in a complex constellation of stakeholders and technologies. The ICT section teaches at the Bachelor and Master level. You can develop and teach courses on AI and healthcare systems, and supervise BSc and MSc graduation projects on themes related to your expertise. You can grow in the collaborative culture of the department and improve your teaching, research, management and leadership skills.
