For support of our biological research we are looking for a hardworking & flexible biotechnical support staff member in fulfilment of a fixed position.

Lab support for the advertised position consists of a general part (see below) and focused support for an ML2 tissue culture lab and small mouse stable. The successful candidate will join two other support staff members whose focus is on a zebrafish aquarium and a molecular biology lab.

Focused support

The successful candidate will work closely with an international team of BSc, MSc, and PhD students to facilitate day-to-day lab operations. This will include:

- Working with and maintaining stable cell lines and acute cell preparations (HEK, HeLa, MDCK, Neural Progenitor Cells, Neurons, mixed cultures)

- Advise, optimization and performance of culturing, transfection and infection procedures (lipofectamine, CalPhos, lenti, AAV)

- Advise, performance and optimization of small animal procedures and husbandry in the context of collaborations with Erasmus MC.

- Training new lab members in the above tasks

- Necessary administrative duties (husbandry records, safety reports, chemical and GGO registration, CCD project proposals)

Given the size of the lab, mouse husbandry will be at a minimal level in the foreseeable future.

General support

Next to the above specialized support tasks, several general support tasks are divided between the support staff. These include:

- Inventory management of durables and consumables (ordering, stocking, dishwashing, autoclaving)

- Maintaining stock of biologicals and chemicals (making of buffers, solutions)

- Caretaker duties (food preparation, feeding, and maintaining aquarium and stable systems; training will be provided if needed), including occasional animal care on weekends and holidays (max 3 hrs/month during irregular hours)

Context

The Biocluster of the Imaging Physics Department in TU Delft is a small-scale biological facility encompassing a zebrafish aquarium, some ML1 biolabs, an ML2 tissue culture lab, and a small mouse stable. The facility is well embedded and used by various labs.

As a young lab, we place a premium on your ability to bring techniques and procedures to the lab that we are not yet familiar with.

Training opportunities are available for the abovementioned tasks, but also for

- Molecular Biology (Gibson, restriction enzymes, golden gate, histology, gels)

- Protein engineering

- Zebrafish husbandry

- optical and acoustic imaging techniques

We will provide the animal caretaker training if necessary.

Candidates should have completed master’s work in a life science discipline, or the equivalent. Experience with one or more of the following: cell culturing, molecular biology, histology, zebrafish husbandry, mouse husbandry and preparation, FELASA or Dutch WoD article 9/12/13 certification; are a strong plus.

Fixed-term contract: 1 year.
