Recent floods in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium showed the catastrophic nature that these extreme events can have on our built environment and infrastructure. These events caused loss of life and huge damage. The event is also a unique opportunity to improve the flood impact models. Therefore data has to be collected and analyzed. The present Interreg project within the EMR (Euregio Meuse-Rhine) aims to improve these models, but this can only be done if data of sufficient quality is collected. This project is expected to:

gathering accessible data on flood damage during the July 2021 flood in the EMR region, as well as corresponding data on flood conditions and vulnerability.
processing accessible data and conduct statistical analysis to generate new knowledge (e.g., empirical relationships, validation of models) on relationships between damage levels to flood conditions (depth, velocity, duration …), based on experience of the partners.
assessing the developed methods and elaborate recommendations for flood loss estimation by operational organizations.
Sharing the research outcomes through a workshop (or webinar) targeting water managers, local, regional and national authorities, as well as other relevant organizations.

To address this challenge, the Hydraulic Engineering department of TU Delft is looking for a motivated PostDoc for a period of 18 months. Selected candidate will analyse the current state-of-the-art of damage models and improve the models with the available data, taking the quality of the data into account . Candidate will also co-supervise MSc students and will work with leading academic and industrial partners, both in the Netherlands and abroad. As part of the Interreg EMR project, collaborations with RWTH Aachen and University of Liège will be encouraged. Start as soon as possible, project duration Juli 2022-December 2023.
