How can robots understand their task and our human values so that we can trust them?

Job description

The CoreSense project is a groundbreaking international and multidisciplinary project that aims at formulating a theory of awareness based on a systemic concept of understanding and implementing it in a reference hybrid cognitive architecture and engineering toolbox for aware autonomous robots. The novel architecture will be validated in the development of three autonomous robot demonstrators with increased capabilities to work without/with limited supervision, and next-generation interaction with humans, with greatly improved intuitive, safe and efficient cognitive, social and physical capabilities, to assist humans. The results will be released in the form of reusable software assets for the ROS ecosystem.

We are looking for an enthusiastic team player to lead the development of the novel hybrid cognitive architecture for autonomous robots based on deep understanding. You will be collaborating very closely with the project team in Delft and the rest of the partners, especially Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, and travelling to Madrid and other partner institutions will be required.

Tasks:

  • Lead the development of the reference hybrid cognitive architecture for robot awareness, based on a novel symbolic approach rooted in category theory.
  • Lead the development of architecture software assets to support the deployment of the cognitive architecture in ROS2 systems
  • Contribute to the cognitive modules for the architecture, such as anticipation, navigation, reconfiguration, explanation, control and diagnosis.

Other tasks include:

  • (Co) authoring scientific articles and project deliverables.
  • Student supervision and teaching.

Requirements

Required qualifications and qualities:

  • PhD in AI, or Robotics, or an adjacent field with a significant background in symbolic methods in AI and/or software engineering and architecture.
  • Interest in cognitive architectures and systems and software engineering.
  • Proven ability to finish projects on time.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken).
  • Ability to work in an open, cooperative, multidisciplinary team.

Desired qualifications and qualities:

  • Interest in at least one of the following: systems theory, cognitive science, philosophy.
  • Experience with practical robotics projects and ROS (for example by controlling a robot arm or a moving robot) or willingness to train during the PhD.
  • Experience with ROS/ROS2, OWL, PDDL, Prolog or LISP
  • Willingness to travel to Madrid, Spain for collaboration.
  • Willingness to attend PhD schools in the project's topics if needed.

Personal development
You will specialize in cognitive architectures and symbolic reasoning, and develop your people and project management skills. You will build a diverse interdisciplinary network that includes roboticists, AI experts, software engineers and system architects.
You are encouraged to develop your own (current) expertise/interest further within the CoreSense project.
In collaboration with the project partners, you will receive (additional) ROS (Robot Operating System) training. There are opportunities to guest lecture in existing BA and MSc courses, and you are expected to supervise MSc students and participate in the supervision of PhD students.
