In the Netherlands, municipalities are responsible for urban water management, including wastewater, stormwater and groundwater. Since 2018, the Netherlands has seen four very dry and warm summers, which revealed that the current urban water systems are unable to cope with a combination of drought and heat. Blue green infrastructures (BGI), such as bioswales, green roofs, permeable pavements and retention spaces in parks, are widely advocated as part of climate change adaptation. However, greening cities results in a significant additional water demand. this additional water demand cannot be met by the drinking water supply, which is also being stressed by the long droughts. As a consequence, coverage of the urban water demand is increasingly challenging. This PhD thesis focuses on the development of concepts for urban water management which are able to provide the required societal services, such as reduction of urban heath, minimisation of urban flooding, managing the water demand and sustaining a good surface water quality. This research is part of the Knowledge programme urban Drainage, funded by the Dutch urban Drainage sector.

We are looking for a candidate with a MSc degree or equivalent in sanitary engineering or (urban) hydrology. We expect a very good level of Dutch, as there will be very close cooperation with Dutch practitioners, strong communication skills and ability to work in a team. 

Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis. Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2541 per month in the first year to € 3247 in the fourth year. The Faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences (CEG) is committed to outstanding international research and education in the field of civil engineering, applied earth sciences, traffic and transport, water technology, and delta technology.
