Job description

Is it your goal to advance fundamental research in brain-inspired computing, as well as to develop new human-centered intelligent technology that improves the well-being of people? Then join one of the leading European neuroscience institutes as an assistant professor. You will delve into real robotic systems and algorithms for real-world applications, while working in a multidisciplinary environment with a diverse international staff.

The overarching goal of the department is to advance fundamental research in brain-inspired computing, broadly relevant to the research themes currently pursued by the Donders Institute, as well as to develop new human-centred intelligent technology to improve the well-being of people. We seek excellent candidates with a track record of relevant research in cognitive robotics. We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience with real robotic systems and developing algorithms for real-world applications.

You will be expected to conduct high-quality research, to apply for external funding, and to interact and collaborate with other researchers in academia and industry. You will be an inspiring member of staff, contributing to a safe and inclusive work environment. You will be expected to carry out normal teaching duties, with a reduced teaching load in the first year. As part of these duties, you will teach courses at BA and/or MA level and supervise BA and MA students.

Requirements

  • You should hold a PhD degree in Cognitive Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related field.
  • You have experience with robotic platforms, simulated and real. Experience with ROS is an advantage. 
  • You have excellent programming skills. 
  • Preferably you have some postdoctoral experience. 
  • You have an excellent track record in scientific research, as evidenced by publications in top-tier venues (e.g. IROS, ICRA). 
  • You have a proven ability to provide inspiring teaching in English. 
  • You have a Dutch university teaching qualification or are willing to obtain one.
  • You have experience with acquiring external funding and possess an entrepreneurial mindset. 
  • You are enthusiastic and are able to work in a team.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: It concerns a temporary employment for 18 months. Upon a positive performance evaluation at the end of this period, the contract may be converted into a permanent one.

  • It concerns an employment for 0.8 - 1.0 FTE.
  • The gross monthly salary amounts to a minimum of €3,974 and a maximum of €5,439 based on a 38-hour working week, depending on previous education and number of years of relevant work experience (salary scale 11).
  • You will receive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • It concerns a temporary employment for 18 months. Upon a positive performance evaluation at the end of this period, the contract may be converted into a permanent one.
  • You will be able to use our Dual Career and Family Care Services. Our Dual Career and Family Care Officer can assist you with family-related support, help your partner or spouse prepare for the local labour market, provide customized support in their search for employment and help your family settle in Nijmegen.
  • Working for us means getting extra days off. In case of full-time employment, you can choose between 30 or 41 days of annual leave instead of the legally allotted 20.

The department operates a number of robotic platforms, including several Naos, a Pepper, and a UR5e arm.
