Job description

The Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences (TSHD) is recruiting an inspiring Dean to lead University College Tilburg (UC Tilburg), starting date: April 1, 2023.


UC Tilburg offers an interdisciplinary, broad and small-scale Liberal Arts and Sciences program and continually seeks to improve and innovate its program and teaching methods. The College is a tight-knit and collegial community of lecturers who share responsibility for maintaining and enhancing its position as educational laboratory. The College has an inclusive and diverse vision on education and aims for students to reach their full potential throughout the program. Study success is defined in terms of students’ intellectual, personal and civic learning gain. UC Tilburg has a participative culture in which some 65 active teaching staff from all Tilburg University Schools contribute to the positioning and content of the program. The Core Staff policy team, currently consisting of the Dean, the Vice Dean and the Senior Policy Advisor, shape and implement the College’s strategy and goals. 

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Overall responsibility for UC Tilburg, including its educational and research profile, organizational management, personnel management, budget, and strategy development.
  • Represent the interests of the University College within TSHD, Tilburg University, the landscape of other University Colleges in the Netherlands and international partner universities. 
  • Represent UC Tilburg during events, such as the Graduation Ceremony, the Opening Conference, conferences, Open Days, introduction week for incoming students, etc.
  • Endorse societally relevant themes, such as resilience and student well-being and community, diversity and sustainability, and integrate them into an educational context. 
  • Provide education in the Liberal Arts and Sciences program, e.g., by teaching a course and/or supervision of bachelor theses.
  • Do and initiate research, e.g., (inter)disciplinary research in the own field of expertise and/or research on educational innovations in collaboration with the Core Staff.

Profile and Qualifications

  • You are an established full professor with an international academic profile in the field of law, economics, humanities and/or social and behavioral sciences. 
  • You have a passion for teaching, and experience or at least proven affinity with Liberal Arts and Sciences education, interdisciplinarity and educational innovations.
  • You have extensive management experience within higher education and commit yourself to the core elements of UC Tilburg’s educational vision.
  • You are able to express a strategic vision on (interdisciplinary) research on educational innovations in higher education.
  • You are a transformational manager with networking abilities, and are persuasive in promoting and representing UC Tilburg within the university, higher education and society.
  • You are fluent in English (at least C1 level). 

Conditions of employment

We offer a fulltime, tenured appointment at Tilburg University. You will be appointed to the position of Dean UC Tilburg for four years. After that, the appointment to this position can be extended with another period of four years. When the appointment to the position of Dean UC Tilburg ends, Tilburg University, in consultation with you, considers itself responsible for a suitable continuation of your career, either within the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences, another position within Tilburg University, or another organization.

Note that we are open to exploring the option of dedicating 0.8 FTE to the Deanship, and 0.2 FTE to a professor position within a suitable academic unit within one of Tilburg University’s Schools.

Depending on the candidate’s experience, the starting gross salary will vary between € 6.099 and €10.721 per month (full time) based on scale Full professor 2 / Full professor 1 in accordance with the of  the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities.

Research and education at the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences (TSHD) has a unique focus on humans in the context of the globalizing digital society, on the development of artificial intelligence and interactive technologies, on their impact on communication, culture and society, and on moral and existential challenges that arise. The School of Humanities and Digital Sciences consists of four departments: Communication and Cognition, Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence, Culture Studies and Philosophy; several research institutes and a faculty office. Also the University College Tilburg is part of the School. Each year around 275 students commence a Bachelor or (Pre) Master Program. The School has approximately 2000 students and 250 employees.
