The University of Amsterdam is seeking to hire two assistant/associate professors in the area of string theory, theoretical cosmology, or mathematical physics. Excellent candidates from a broad range of research areas will be considered. The search is primarily focused on hiring at the junior level, but candidates at a more senior level (up to full professor) will also be considered.

What are you going to do?

You will be part of the Amsterdam string theory group. The local research environment includes the theoretical cosmology group and GRAPPA within the Institute of Physics, as well as the mathematics institute, QuSoft, and Nikhef. We encourage applications from candidates who will interact significantly with one or more of these groups. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity of the academic community.

You will be teaching mostly in our Bachelor and Master programs in Physics and Astronomy.

• a relevant PhD degree in theoretical physics;
• excellent research skills, evidenced by a track record of publications in renowned international journals, and talks at international conferences/workshops;
• demonstrable excellent didactic abilities; an affinity for teaching at Bachelor and Master level;
• preferably experience with the (co-)supervision of BSc, MSc and/or PhD students;
• (the ability to develop) the management skills required for general academic administration, organisation and coordination tasks;
• ability to attract external funding;
• excellent communication skills;
• good command of English and willingness to learn the Dutch language.

We offer an employment contract for 38 hours per week. Preferred start date will be Fall 2023. The position will in principle be filled at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor, depending on your qualifications. For more senior applicants, an appointment as Full Professor can be considered.

For appointments as assistant professor, we offer a tenure-track agreement for five years. At the start, we will draw up a tenure-track agreement with you, specifying the performance criteria for research, teaching and management tasks. The requirements in this agreement are negotiable and depend on your experience and scientific profile. Following a positive assessment after three years the appointment will become permanent, with a further promotion to associate professor foreseen at the end of the five-year period.

For appointments at the level of associate professor, we offer you a tenured position with a probation period of 18 months.

The starting salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel and depending on experience and qualifications. It will range from a minimum of €3,974 gross per month up to a maximum of €7,362 gross per month (salary scale 11-12 for assistant professors and salary scale 13 - 14 for associate professors) based on full-time employment. This is exclusive of 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. A favourable tax agreement, the '30% ruling', may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Universities of the Netherlands is applicable.

Faculty of Science
