Job description

We are looking for an emerging scholar in the field of Artificial Intelligence and the politics of environmental change. Your research will contribute to political science debates around the design, application and implications of artificial intelligence on the governance of environmental change. You have an emerging record in developing theoretical perspectives to understand the role of digital technologies, including AI, in shaping regional and global environmental and/or natural resource governance regimes. You also have demonstrated ambitions to develop new methodologies for the social and/or political scientific analysis of these technologies.

You will develop, supervise and carry out high-quality research in collaboration with your own international network, as well as with colleagues at the Environmental Policy Group and Wageningen University. You will also be pro-active in acquiring funding from a mix of government, EU and private sources and publish regularly in leading international academic journals. Over the medium term, you will be supported to develop an individual research grant application to either the Dutch Innovational Research Incentives Scheme or the European Research Council.

You will contribute to a strongly internationally oriented teaching programme at Wageningen University. In the short term, you will be expected to adapt existing courses taught by the Environmental Policy Group in (for example) the Msc Sustainability Governance or MSc Environmental Sciences programmes. Over the long term, opportunities will emerge to develop your own courses and contribute to the design and policy of MSc and BSc programmes at the University.
The successful candidate will proceed through the tenure track system at Wageningen University. Within a maximum of 12 years of being appointed, you have the opportunity to reach the level of Professor in your own field. On the path to professor you will develop an internationally visible independent research line and identify where your research makes a societal impact.
You will also be a strong team player. The Environmental Policy Group has five thematic research areas. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues and students in any of these themes focusing on Governing Climate Futures, Sustainable Urban Infrastructures, Environmental Mobilities, Marine Governance and Sustainable Food Transformations. Above all, you are a personable, social colleague willing to balance your personal interests with those of the group.

Requirements

  • A PhD degree in political sciences or a discipline related to the social dimension of environmental science.
  • A clear vision on studying how artificial intelligence related technologies affect attempts to transition the world to more sustainable outcomes.
  • A strong background in qualitative research design and methods and methodologies
  • A demonstrated interest in building bridges with other disciplines (incl data science and life sciences) and in contributing to the development of social science expertise on AI and its relation to environment and natural resources.
  • Excellent communication and social skills, a coaching leadership style and experience in acquiring and leading internationally oriented research projects.
  • A demonstrated international publication record.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire and supervise MSc students and PhD scholars.
  • Demonstrated experience and affinity with delivering high quality education at both BSc and MSc levels; A Dutch university teaching qualification (BKO) or equivalent will eventually be required.
  • Proven capacity to develop an international network in your specific field.
  • A strong team player willing to contribute to the wider interests of the group.

Conditions of employment

In addition to these first-rate employee benefits, you will be offered a fixed-term, 7 year contract which, upon positive evaluation based on criteria elaborated in the University's Tenure Track policy, can lead to a permanent employment contract as professor. Depending on your experience, we offer a competitive gross salary of between € 3.974,- and € 5.439,- for a full-time working week of 38 hours in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) (scale 11).
