Come join QuTech and create the Quantum Future!

Job description

At QuTech, we are actively looking for an experimental scientist to help our efforts towards building protected qubits. The existing research focuses on topological qubits and novel architectures based on superconducting circuits. Looking for an innovative, inspiring and passionate place to work at? Look no further!

The candidate’s research program is expected to contribute to the general aim of the Qubit Research Division (QuRe) within QuTech. In the Qubit Research Division we work on developing novel qubits that are protected from noise by design. The mission is to understand, develop and demonstrate protected qubits that outperform established technology.

Applications for a tenured associate or full professorship will be considered for exceptionally well qualified candidates.

Candidates interested in teaching can participate the development of courses offered by the university both at the undergraduate and at the graduate level. This can happen in collaboration with the department of Quantum Nanoscience (QN) in the faculty of Applied Sciences.

The department of Quantum Nanoscience studies quantum phenomena in a wide variety of nanometer scale devices and materials, exploring new physics and novel applications of quantum effects. Areas include Quantum Matter, Quantum Sensing and Quantum Transduction.

QuTech together with the Departments of Bionanoscience and Quantum Nanoscience constitute the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience at Delft (KIND) established by the US-based Kavli foundation. The successful candidate will be part of this vibrant research community and can expect a competitive start-up package to enable a quick start of their research program.

QuTech
QuTech is a mission-driven research institute run jointly by Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). Together, we work on a radically new technology with world-changing potential, developing scalable prototypes of a quantum computer and an intrinsically safe quantum internet.

We are creating the quantum future and we believe that quantum technology will be a game changer in many social and economic sectors – including health, agriculture, climate and safety. To achieve our ambitious goals, we bring together scientists, engineers and industry in an inspiring environment, with plenty of space for ambition, entrepreneurship and innovation.

Our research and engineering activities are conducted in three divisions: Quantum ComputingQuantum Internet and Qubit Research.

Requirements

A successful candidate should have experience as an experimental scientist and should synergize with and complement the research topics of the Qubit Research Division. Possible research topics of a successful candidate could be (but are not limited to):

  • Implementing topology through Hamiltonian engineering
  • superconducting/semiconducting hybrid devices
  • new superconducting qubit architectures such as 0-π qubits.

Research activities can range from material development to device measurement.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 years.

Junior candidates will be appointed on a tenure-track basis with the prospect of a tenured position following a successful evaluation after maximally 5 years. (A sSenior candidate will be offered a more tailor made offer depending on their experience).

Fixed-term contract: 6 years with evaluation for permanent employment after max 5 years.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. In the fifth year we’ll decide if you will be offered a permanent faculty position, based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment.

Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme.

TU Delft sets high standards for the English proficiency of the teaching staff. The TU Delft offers training to improve English proficiency. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer courses to learn the Dutch language within three years.

TU Delft/QuTech offers a customizable compensation package, an attractive pension scheme, holiday allowance, generous holidays, 13th month pay (paid as a pro-rata bonus in December), a discount for health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.

For international applicants we offer the Coming to Delft Service and Partner Career Advice to assist you with your relocation. An International Children's Centre offers childcare and there is an international primary school.
